Title: Network setup for V-Ray
Post by: NCViz on December 01, 2017, 04:11:22 PM
Hello,

I am testing V-Ray on our render farm and having issues with Distributed rendering.  I have read the FAQ an done the teapot test.  According to that is seems to be a texture/proxy issue.  All paths are UNC and accessible.  We have been running a Mental Ray setup for years without issue and that is still in place.  All I did was install V-Ray on 1 client and 2 nodes for testing.

We have our Itoo plugins and Mental Ray shaders in a shared folder on the network.  I saw in a post where you are not supporting this now but it has been working fine with Mental Ray.  We have modified the 3rdparty.mi file to point to the Mental Ray shaders on the network.  I can't find any way to point to the V-Ray shader.  Is this causing the issue?

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Hi, there is not a specific file to define the path for the V-Ray shaders. We use standard DLLs, which are loaded from the Max root folder, or from any folder defined in the Windows PATH environment variable.
You can find the shaders in the Max root folder, as ForestVray??.dll (there are multiples files, one for each V-Ray version).

Said that, if the teapot test is rendering well but without textures, then V-Ray DLLs are loaded correctly. If not, teapots should not be visible.

Theorically V-Ray uses the same asset manager than Mental Ray, which is provided by Max. But i don't know if ChaosGroup has introduced some additional tweaks.
Have you tried enabling the "Transfer missing assets" checkbox ?. This option was helpful in other similar cases.

"Transfer missing assets"  did not work.  I reinstalled Forest Pro on the nodes and then had to change the license mode to point to our network license server.  They now appear to be rendering correctly.  I will have to do some further testing on other nodes.  They shouldn't have to acquire a license so I'm not sure what fixed issue.

No, render nodes don't use a license or connect with the server in any way.
It may have fixed something with the reinstallation...
