new feature in forest pack please
« on: May 07, 2017, 11:55:21 AM »
Hi everyone,

hoping this is the right section of the forum..

here the thing..
would it be nice to have the possibility to change the size of the scattered objects with something like a brush..
I try to explain it: imagine that we have a lawn grass area, at some point we would like to introduce some other small plants in some area.. but we want to have some kind of transition between the lawn grass and the new small plants.. if we have a brush that can be used to rescale those objects could be very usefull..
then, this is just an option that can be added, I believe this method can be implemented to control even more things..

what do you think?
is there a similar option already and maybe I just don't know how to?

thanks

This is perhaps nearly the same I posted on January 27, 2017.

In my opinion this feature can be implemented here (see attached image)

An it would also be useful to use a falloff curve

Hi,

Thanks a lot for your suggestion, your feedback is very important to us. We'll evaluate its implementation in future releases.

Currently it's possible to control the scale by Transform - Scale - Map, which you might find handy for these purposes. Also, using multiple Forest objects and blending those seamlessly by Areas - Falloff - Scale might be an option.

Best regards,

It's not even necessary to paint or create a falloff area, you can blend automatically two Forest objects, adjusting easily the distance and scale curve.

In the attached example one Forest object is used as exclude area for the other Forest. Blending is done using Faloff->Scale in both objects.
This approach lets you to modify the inner object as you like (i.e. editing the spline), and the outer grass is adjusted on-the-fly.

I hope you find it useful.

well .. the thing is that is still related to a spline or mesh .. my idea was to have a completely free hand tool that allow the artist to change scale (or even more options) not depending on a spline or so.. (sometimes is good to have it as it is.. some other could be usefull a free hand tool)

however if you decided to add something like that in the next release will be really appreciate

thank you!

I have to discuss this issue with my team, but the problem with free hand tools is that you lost the benefits of the parametric distributions.

I mean: you can scale or modify easily the items, but what if you want later to make grass more dense, replace models, adjust a cluster, etc ? That's not posible, because items as defined as  independent elements (with their position, scale, etc). Your suggestion would fit more as an improvement of Custom Edit mode (what it's other possibility).

Instead, using Forest Areas you have a Paint tool to your disposal, but internally it works "painting" a spline. In fact, there are options to convert a Paint area to a Spline and back.
For example, in the previous scene you can convert the spline area of Forest002 (inner object) to a Paint area, make you changes and everything is updated automaticaly.

I know that both methods are very different. I just want to show you how the parametric approach can be much more versatile, specially if you need to make changes later.
Of course we appreciate your comments and feedback, specially if the proposed workflow doesn't suit well with your needs.

Thanks,
