Strip down FFP
« on: September 20, 2013, 03:04:03 AM »
Hi,

We are often creating forest packs with loads of objects so that we are able to quickly place some specific elements all over the scene.
The thing is, often, we are ending not using all of the geometry objects that are placed in the geometry tab.
To try to keep the scene clean and light, it would be great to have a "strip geometry to only the one used".

That way, if we end up using only 10 obj in stead of the 20 or 30 that are in the FFP, it would clean and delete the 20 others not used.
This would help a lot.

Thanks

Stan

The problem is that is not clear what are the unused objects. I mean, a specific model may not appear because different reasons:

1) Its probability is 0%.
2) There is not any area using it.
3) It's probablity is not 0%, but the random algorithm didn't use it.
4) On Custom Edit mode, that model is not used.
5) Others.

It's not easy to identify all possible situations. Also in some cases removing it from the Geometry List may change the distribution (i.e. when its prob. is 0%). I'm afraid a feature as this would be very problematic.

I understand, but for our specific needs, it make sense :
We are a archviz company and we place AXYZ people all over our scene.
They are always hand placed through custom edit, never distributed automatically.
We have a forest pack containing 250+ meshes of persons, each one is HQ as it's the scanned onces from AXYZ.
If we render the forest pack, rams goes quickly over 40Gb because it loads all the meshes even when only 5-10 are used.

That's why it would be great to have a strip to keep only the current geometry, and this option would only be available when FFP is setup as custom edit.
That way, only the 5-10 meshes that are in FPP will be kept. And I can easily delete all the other from the scene, keeping things light and fast.

Make sense?

Thanks

I'm sorry, but it's not possible to implement this feature.
We should rewrite critical parts of the core, and even doing this i don't know if we get some benefit, because Max must load and process all models within the scene, even if Forest doesn't use them.

Why about creating a Forest library with all characters, and load only what's needed ?
