Title: Paint is much slower than previous versions
Post by: PastaJackal on November 27, 2018, 07:20:40 AM
Hi there,

After updating to version 6 of Forest Pack, our studio has noticed a severe drop in the performance of using Area>Paint. After only a few strokes, it becomes too laggy and unresponsive to use as intended. We ended up using little hacks where we turn off the paint visibility, but that can only take us so far to ensure we can see what we are doing. I've tested this by opening a fresh install of max, creating a 6mx6m plane and a 5cm cube to paint along its surface - with all other settings at default. The issue arises after dragging the paint brush along the surface almost immediately. Is there any possible solution to this?

Our studio was on 3ds Max 2016 (which had the same issue) and has since upgraded to 2019 (formatted all machines) with no change. Our machines range from 40 core dual xeons to i9 machines with 1080ti cards, so the issue is not with our hardware strength. The version of Forest Pack is 6.1.2 and I've attached a screenshot to illustrate the simplicity of the scene.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated as we regularly work with large vegetative scenes that require a lot of manual touch-ups for realism.

Thank you!

We have not received any negative feedback regarding paint brush in new version.
I can't reproduce it on my not so powerful machine either.

Please attach Your stuttering scene maybe there are some other settings in effect.

Update:
Did some tests
I can confirm that V5.4.1 was faster. We will investigate where the problem is.
Thanks for feedback.

Thank you Rokas!

If this is any help, it seems the lag issue directly correlates with how many brush 'splines' are visible as well as the number of instanced geometry.

Test with a small brush vs a large brush and was able to create a larger surface area of paint with the large brush before it lagged. Increasing mesh density would also scale the amount of lag quite quickly. For example, having 10 instances of the box would still be workable, but having 100 would become too laggy

Just quickly rebuilt the test scene keeping settings at default in case that helps

I just download new 6.1.5 but still no progress in speed. Is there any news about slow painting? Thanks

Hi

We did improve this feature in 6.1.5

I recorded some mouse movements and played that with 6.1.2

and 6.1.5:

I definitely think that 6.1.5 has acceptable performance.

Could You please attach Your scene so we can investigate- maybe You have some special case we are not aware.

Just quick test in black scene... First handwrited text "Test 1" is OK. Second is laggy :-(

I test more and it faster. So sorry for that. But i think still no so fast as 5.x. But maybe my memeory in head is broken :-)
In this file is two paint areas. One is made in FP 6.1.5 and is much cleaner then sencond made in 6.1.2.

Thing is we use different procedures which are much faster than v5 in other areas. The downside was as You all pointed out slower paintbrush performance.
We believe we now found acceptable parameters for paint brush as well.

We may return to the issue if more users would complaint about the issue.

Ok. I understand now. I fully agree that FP 6 is much faster then 5 in other things. I just dont know why is paint slow.
Solution will be to hide or dont "update" FP but just paint and see paint area. Update FP only when release LMB (left mouse button).
