Remove VRay FP materials?
« on: November 05, 2011, 08:17:27 PM »
I had installed the VRay demo for a couple of tests last week. Then, I loaded an older scene started prior to installing VRay. I worked in Mental Ray and as far as I can see I have no Vray materials or anything in the scene.

My render farm does not have VRay, so after setting up all of my passes I attempted a render but it seems there are some forest templates that are connected somehow to VRay. But I never had the VRay render selected in this scene.

I am attempting to remove the VRay associations but I can't find a clean way to do it while preserving my scene and tree layout. I can't really even find out where they are referenced. I checked the materials in the templates and they are all A&D. But I know it is some of the forest templates causing the missing dll errors:

missing dlls: vrender90.dll, vray2sidedmtl90.dll

Any help appreciated.

This script may be useful here. It can be used to search and convert all VRay materials to Standard and back. If there is some VRay material applied to the templates, you can see it easily:

As far i remember, Forest doesn't create other dependencies from VRay, aside the materials.

Thank you. I tried that script but it fails. Probably because I no longer have VRay installed. THe only objects that are giving me problems are the templates. I guess I have to rebuild the scene and see what happens.

UPDATE AHA!! I found the problem.

When using the HQ_Plants_1 library, if I use XREFs for the plants I get from that library the references point to files that must have VRay materials. That's why I don't see anything when I look for VRay materials in the scene?

If I merge instead of using Xrefs, I get the VRay error as usual on import but after saving the scene, the error is gone and project load into non-VRay setups without error.

So it looks like I may not be able to use the XRefs for those HQ Plants libraries ? I hope I can because I saved 400MB memory doing it that way.

Please advise.

UPDATE

After trying numerous things to get around this.. I located the offending forest_templates and xref'd them to a file on my network machines. These were templates that contained HQPLants which apparently were merged into my scene even though I had importer set to xref. I am not sure if I am supposed to do that but it got my renders going.

Well, i just done a test in a Max configuration without VRay:

- The HQ Plants max files include the VRay materials in the material editor. This is the reason to get the missing VRay error when importing the trees from the library.
- Using the Merge mode, the trees are merged in the scene and Forest applies to them the Mental Ray material. If the scene is saved, there is not any reference to VRay.
- But using the XRef mode, we create a reference to the HQ Plants max file. Since this file uses VRay (because the material editor), we get an error each time the scene is loaded or rendered.

Unfortunately there is not an easy solution to this issue, because we cannot modify the HQ Plant files from Forest. Perhaps you would to leave installed the VRay demo to avoid the warning messages...

Yes! That was my conclusion as well. I did find a way to get it sorted out by manually XREF'ing the objects after Forest has imported them. I love the plants. They're very good. But the VRay format is a bit of a problem to get around. Kudos to Itoo for implementing a solution though.

The HQ creator has mentioned converting the plants to MR in the near future.

Thanks again for stellar support.  ;D

I have not been able to find any more recent information so I'm posting this here.

I recently had an intern go through all of the files in HQ Plants libraries and delete the Vray materials from the editor.  I did this hoping to avoid installing the Vray demo on all 40 of our render nodes.  I am still getting a Vray error when adding these trees to a scene using xrefs.  Any ideas where else this could be coming from?

I found this script to remove missing DLLs from the scene. I've not tried it, but should work for V-Ray as well.

I hope that helps.

I only get the missing plugin error when loading the file through Forest Pro as an Xref.  Opening the actual tree file does not report any missing dlls so that script will not work.

Edit:  After further investigation I found that I also had to remove the Vray materials from the HQ_Plants_1_matlib file.
