Pointcloud preview export
« on: September 25, 2025, 01:22:10 pm »
Hi,

So I'm experimenting with Gaussian splats in postshot, and 1 of the things that can speed up the GS calculation process is having a pointcloud already. Now ForsestPack does a great and fast job of having a pointcloud representation in the viewport.

So now I'm looking for a way to export those pointclouds but afaik there's no way to do this at the moment without either using the forest tools to create instances and then using tyflow to generate a pointcloud on those items. Another way is to have ForestPack display the mesh and then use tyflow to generate PCs on top of that. This works (rather slow) if you have like 10 trees but no huge forests or big surfaces of plants/grasses or whatnot.

It would be great if we could export the pointcloud ForestPack generates and use that for any purpose we seem fit, Gaussian Splats in my case. This actually also applies to RailClone.

So could we have access through maxscript or even have a tool from Itoo themselves to export that pointcloud? It would be a great help.

Thank you.

Hi,

I'm afraid the Points-cloud viewport interpretation is designed solely for internal use by the plug-in, and there is no way to export it - neither through the UI nor via Maxscript. Thank you for your understanding.

Best regards,

Thanks for the answer. Shame though would be very cool, I can imagine there's a lot more possibilities with such a feature, is it impossible or just not something that is in line of what iToo wants to do for the future?
