[Solved] Problems with preset "Layered Lawn"
« on: September 05, 2020, 10:10:09 PM »
This particular template results in a grey render when I use Arnold.
None of the other (those I have tried) presets have this problem.

Please see the screenshot.

What could be the cause?

For the record, here is a screenshot with another grass, which works.

Hi

Thanks for contacting us. Would You please specify which layered lawn exactly? I have tested few of them and they load and render just fine.

If all of them, they You probably have some missing maps. Pleas try to uninstall and install again the package.

Let me know if it helped.

I don't think this is the cause of the problem.
Here, you can see a render in vray. Never mind the bad lighting. I just wanted to demonstrate that the grass came out green

once I changed the renderer to arnold, the same thing happened

Before posting the reply, I did as you suggested. Uninstalled and installed, in case there might be other things behind the scenes I am not aware of. Yet the same result.
Do you want me to provide a max-file just in case?

By the way, I picked the first item under layered lawn.

Here is the file:
https://easyupload.io/hdledp

Render in Scanline first, then switch to Arnold.
I haven't tried ALL layered lawns, but all of the layered lawns that I have tried had had the same problem  :(

the link will expire in 29 days. So if you, Itoo, need this to stay available here for other people to learn from, you need to solve it somehow.

OK, seems like easyupload started to work.

Regarding Your report, have You tried enabling Legacy 3ds Max map support, as indicated by Arnold pop up:

I haven't tried that and thanks for the tip.
However, my biggest concern is why the other assets work but not those?

My guess is that the layered lawns were made in one go (ish) or by the same hand and therefore equally not working.
The question is; what needs to be done to the layered lawn to have them behave like the others? Could someone at itoo do the investigating please?
Once revealed, I think the layered lawn asset package needs to be updated.
I am rather sure they're not equally properly made as the other assets.

Arnold renderer do not support some generic maps like listed in the error log.
Some of the maps are falloff, gradient ramp, forest color. To make these maps work, You need to enable Legacy 3ds Max map support.

Furthermore, each renderer has its own material library:

It is best to use designated library for each of the renderers instead of "Scanline/Standard" You are using now.

Material is decided when loading the preset.

Hope this helps.

@Rokas,

So to sum it up, Arnold does not support the Falloff and Forest Color maps. This is why some of the assets worked, and some not in my previous posts; the assets simply didn't use any of the two maps.

As for Materials > Using > Automatic Selector, it seems not as critical as the issue above. If I am using Scanline, the Automatic Selector will place assets with Standard-materials. When using Arnold, the Automatic Selector uses Physical Materials.
Arnold supports Standard as well, as long as none of the unsupported maps is used.

Arnold supports those two (and quite a few more) maps when You enable legacy map support. We can't say those maps are not supported. They are.

Standard materials are not meant to be used with vray/corona/arnold renderer, although they technically render those. They are old and materials do not look the best they can. It is recommended to use vray materials for vray render engine, corona materials for corona renderer, and arnold materials for arnold renderer.
Physical material and Standard Surface material are almost synonyms and they are native Arnold Shaders.
