Title: Reference Objects Problem
Post by: ralphr on May 09, 2016, 11:20:25 AM
I am currently trying to make use of the tree editor to place geometry on the center faces of an object. My FP has the geometry I want to scatter but when I click on the "Select Objects" button to pull up the "Create Items in Objects Positions" list it is empty. It just shows me the layers in my scene. Now I am not quite sure if I am missing a step so any help would be appreciated. (Using FP 5.0.5)

Cheers,
Ralph

What type of object do you want to use as target ?
The "Select Objects" list should show any object with a standard mesh, or which can be converted to mesh. Please, check if your object meets that requirement.

I am just trying it with a simple plane right now to understand the functionality. The plane has around 10-15 segments. Tried as editable poly and mesh.

If it doesn't work, please upload the plane and we'll check it.

Can I send the scene via email?

Thanks for the scene. As shown in the screenshot, the selector works fine here, displaying the three objects.

Forest uses a standard "Selector by Name" dialog from Max. Please, double check you have not filters that are limiting the display (the buttons on the top toolbar).

Oh god, I didn't even think about the filters. Somehow they were all disabled.
Big thanks for the help Carlos.

Edit: Follow up question now that I can select my object it seems that (same file) it creates two instances per face center. Is there anything I have to change to keep it at one object per center?

No Problem. Glad i could help out.

Please note this tool uses basic mesh faces (triangles), not polygonal faces as Editable Poly does. In your case, each quad face has two trianglular faces.
