Multiple Versions of Max on Single Version of Forestpack
« on: October 21, 2014, 08:46:09 PM »
Hi,
I was wondering what kind of support Forestpack had for supporting multiple versions of Max simultaneously, particularly in the case of render nodes. I ask this because I could not get 2014 and 2015 to work simultaneously when using the network install, and noticed that the registry keys hardcode the path to the main 3ds Max directory. We need this feature as our facility is staggered between versions of 3ds Max and transitioning from 2014 to 2015.

We're using Forestpack 4.2.4.385

Thanks!
Shem

Hi Shem,

Actually Forest Pack's installer doesn't have the option of selecting multiple versions of 3ds Max and the installation process needs to be repeated by selecting corresponding versions of 3ds Max.

Please proceed the installation of our plugin for the 3ds Max 2015 version. The plugin will not be removed from the other (3ds Max 2014) installation. Please note, that for render nodes you should use in the Select Installation Type window the Render slave node option (attaching screenshot).

Anyway, as the unattended installation is supported, this can be done by creating .bat file which will execute the installation for all versions needed.

Please see list of available parameters below:

/s - enable silent installation
/maxver=[max9-32, max9-64, max2008-32, max2008-64, max2009-32, max2009-64, max2010-32, max2010-64, max2011-32, max2011-64, max2012-32, max2012-64, max2013-32, max2013-64, max2014-64, max2015-64]
/MAXDIR=<3dmax installation path>
/LICMODE=[rendermode, network, stand-alone]
/LICHOST=[License server host]
/LICPORT=<License server TCP port>

Also please note, that you can install Forest Pack on your render nodes using the setup program, or copying files manually. You can find more information here.

I can confirm, that we'll add this option in the next release.

Kind regards,

snguyen

Okay, I've gotten that to work, but it looks like I've run into an issue where it isn't compatible with our version of Vray. Is there any documentation/release notes that indicate the latest version of VRay that any of the releases are compatible with?
We're currently testing against some nightly versions of V-Ray, so knowing what Forestpack supports out of the box would be great!
Here are the specs that I'm currently looking at:
Max 2015 EXT 1
Vray 3.0.5.07.25001
Forestpack 4.2.4.385
Thanks!

You can see Forest release notes here. Support for VRay 3 was added in v.4.2.2, and Max 2015 in v.4.2.4, so your configuration should work fine. What error do you get exactly ?

Regarding nightly builds, there is not guarantee that work with the latest Forest release. That depends of the changes introduced by ChaosGroup in the new versions.
