Title: Request: Forest Pack Random Material for Vray
Post by: KN1988 on March 04, 2015, 04:37:50 PM
Hi again,

I have a simple question:
Suppose I have 1 car imported as geometry in Forest pack (multisub material). Making car-paint color variations is simple because of the forest color map. They get randomly assigned and voila; different colored cars. Easy but....
- What if I'd like to have random material variations: So not only the (diffuse)map gets randomized, but the entire material? Cars that have a more matt car-paint material, some dirty carpaint materials etc.
- Or (and this is what I need it for) I have 1 tree geometry model with a multisub material. I'd like to have random assigned leaves materials per scattered object. This way I'd only have 1 forest object but the scattered objects could look totally different (apart from the geometric form). Different barks and different leaves per scattered objects gives endless possibilities.... especially when combined with a forest color map.

If i'm correct Thea render has a random material that seems to work like this with forest pack. Unfortunately Vray doesn't....

Summarry:
Is there a possibility to devellop a forest material that randomly assigns materials, not only the (diffuse) forest color map. Kind of like the multi-sub material, but without the object ID?

Thanks for your answer.
Best regards,

Hi,

As mentioned on this related thread about possibilities of the Forest Color map "Map to map correspondence (http://forum.itoosoft.com/index.php?topic=2677.0)":

"Although it's mainly designed to add colour variation to the Forest items, it can be used in other slots than the diffuse one."

For these purposes ("Random Materials"), you can use various Forest Color (http://docs.itoosoft.com/display/FORESTPACK/Forest+Color) maps and link them to any of material slot(s) (not only to diffuse) needed. This way you can archive the effect you are after (random control over multiple material adjustments).

By having probabilities values set identically for all of used Forest Color (http://docs.itoosoft.com/display/FORESTPACK/Forest+Color) maps, these map slots will correspond as the random seed value is calculated on a geometry (item / face) basis. This way you can set up easily really big variety of that material -> "materials" and still have precise control over its randomization.

Kind regards,

Thanks for the reply.

I know this is a possible solution. Though it isn't as friendly as a "random multi-sub material".
Disadvantages:
- I'll need to breakdown all the materials to make this new material (really time consuming as apposed to drag and drop instances)
- I can't make different BRDF types.
I just hoped there was an easy solution (like a new Vray or Forespack shader) or other workaround (by using a unknown shader or script or plugin or something).

I'll just go with this solution, because there is no other way at the moment.
Thanks again and best regards
