Title: Slow performance when selecting forest Objects with active modify Panel
Post by: Robbert543 on March 09, 2021, 11:02:42 AM
in 3ds Max (2019) Selecting a Forest Object with the Modify panel open is extremely slow.
In some cases, it may take up to 30 seconds before the panel is loaded.

it's instant when selecting with any other tab open.

It seems to be a little bit quicker if you close all rollouts before deselecting.

Anyone else have this issue and a solution?

30s is unacceptable, of course.
how long does it take to select editable poly in modify tab?

What CPU do You have?
I have AMD 1gen thread ripper and that CPU is slower than my old intel PC when selecting any object in modify tab.
It takes up to 4 seconds at MAX to select ForestPack object when having multiple max versions running etc.

Threadripper 3990x here, takes 9 seconds to select with modify panel open. What do you mean with multiple max instances open, what does that have to do with displaying a menu slowly?

I had problems with saving/opening files when 2 or more 3dsMax instances open. See this thread: https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/3ds-max-forum/multiple-3ds-max-instances-open-saving-lag/td-p/11470371

I turned off Load plugins when used, and that fixed everything. But now I'm getting very slow FP select times with modify panel open.

This is a known issue with certain CPUs, as described here: https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/3ds-max/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/3ds-Max-UI-lags-or-seems-sluggish-even-on-very-fast-multi-core-CPUs.html

Basically the UI is much more slower than it should. This problem is more noticeable in Forest because the complexity of its interface, which includes many rollups and controls.
Unfortunately there is not much we can do. Some time ago we removed the tooltips, to minimize the UI load, and included options to hide rollups (General->Settings (https://docs.itoosoft.com/forestpack/forest-plugin/general)).

According to user's feedback, this problem seems fixed or minimized with recent CPUs. If that helps as reference, in an AMD Ryzen 9 5900X, Forest modify panel takes about one second to open.
