Title: Struggling with RAM usage
Post by: Dean on October 31, 2013, 10:36:06 AM
Hello!

I have a scene where I am creating a rug by scattering strands over an area, but the RAM using is right up to my 16gb limit.

Firstly, does FP use more RAM if I have more objects, or more geometry? ie if I create clumps of strands and then scatter them, will this help with RAM, even if the poly count is about the same?

Also is there any tricks to manage RAM usage?

Cheers,
Dean

Forest Pack creates natives instances in the render engine for each scattered object. Although the process is fast, it consumes more memory depending of the total number of objects. Creating clumps of strands definitely is a help, I suggest you to see the Grass Edges tutorial (http://"http://www.itoosoft.com/forestpack/tutorials/tutorial_grass_edges.php"), there we show how to combine different types of clumps to cover large areas.

In any case, could you tell us what render engine are you using ?

Thank you yuv, I'll take a look at that now.

I'm using Vray 2.4

I think I'm making some progress, but what I'm struggling with is creating a dense enough rug, with out exceeding the 500,000 limit. If I enable collisions this helps, but the edges are too sparse.

Anyway, I'll watch that video now, and see how I get on.

OK please ignore my comment about density, that video really cleared things up.
