Custom Library for CG Axis Trees workflow
« on: November 26, 2018, 07:15:00 AM »
I'm posting to review my workflow and hopefully have people offer suggestions or confirm/ rebuke my method. I have a bunch of tree packages from CG Axis (hereafter CGA) I want to create user library's for. After playing around for almost the entire day I think I have figured out a way. This also assumes you have already established your library and have your folder structure set up correctly and have images of the trees saved int he thumbnail folder

1. None of the CGA trees seem to be grouped editable polys. They are all separate. So first thing I do i select the "NAME_01" and then attached the other elements to it with the attachment option "Match Material to Material ID's" (second) selected and "Condense Material and ID's unchecked (I don't know why, just seemed less constraining). Be careful to check editable poly name. It will add a "_01" after and this will cause a problem with associating the saved thumbnails later.

2. I do this for each of the tree models in a particular family.

3. I go back to the first one and save-as removing the individual number of that particualr tree model. EX: "cgaxis_models_109_06_american_hornbeam_vray.max" becomes "cgaxis_models_109_american_hornbeam_vray.max". Then I merge in all the other American Hornbeam trees, taking care to move the merged trees that come in off of one another and then save the file.

4. Next I go back to the library and follow the documented steps to "Import Objects...", and when the "Import from Scene" box opens, I select all the trees.

5. I save the new additions and then hit the "Refresh Thumbnails" button next to the "Save Current Library" button.

Can anyone else confirm/ rebuke this method? I am hoping I am overlooking something and there is an easier. Otherwise I'm going to hire an intern to do a lot of tree organzing.

Hi Thomas,

You might find handy setting the * tag, which forces the Library Browser to automatically attach all objects into a single mesh & create a Multi/Sub-Object material - mentioned in the tightly related “Efficient Way to Add New Library” thread.

Best regards,
