Tiles on 3D Surface

Hi iToo!

I´ve being trying to make something with no success, hope you can help me with it!

The idea is filling a surface with hexagonal tiles. This i recon would be simple enough with FP (i can´t think of a way in RC since the surface curves in 2 axys) but i can only get this close to making it right... not good enough obviously.

Attached you can see the Hexagons placed on a curved surface. I used FP and UV mode. i also made a custom distribution bitmap so hexagons don´t overlap. (the preset ones wouldn´t work for this case i don´t think)

Also attached, an example surface i want to add hexagons to:
- First problem comes from using UV mode (since i can´t get the surface propperly UV unwrapped, my fault and the fact that the model comes from who knows)
- Second problem would be the borders, i´d need the hexagons to at least happen everywhere so i could maybe slice them with vray cutter?

If this is done on RC better let me know.

Hey there!

I decided i should try again rebuilding the mesh and doing some decent UVW unrwrapping. Seems to work fine. I did make a "simpler" version of the surface without those vertical stripes or gaps, i hope to fix that some other way, for now having the surface propperly filled with hexagons is some improvement. Still though:
- I need to make a better distribution grid image based on the X and Y measurements of the hexagons (Grids 1 to 3 on FP won´t work for hexagonal tiles if i´m not mistaken) I made my own version based on Grid 3, but is still not good enough. Working on that.
- I need to know if it´s possible in FP to make "one more" hexagon at the borders continuing the last normal, that way i don´t have missing bits of hexagons which pivot falls off the edge of the surface, if i explain myself.

Hi. First You know You can unlock distribution map aspect ratio in ForestPack?


Second question do You need Your hexa tiles be cut or not? Only RailClone can actually cut the segments- FP cant. If You need then FP is not suitable tool.

That is not possible.

Anyway, I would recommend using RailClone for this with advanced workaround technique demonstrated in this thread.

Hi! Thank you! i will take a look at that thread right away!

Also thanks for the unlock aspect ratio, only just discovered that a few minutes after my last message, once i kept trying and became aware of that "tick" which i think i never used before.

I do want the hexagons to be cut at the borders, although i thought i could find a workaround for that in case i couldn´t with FP.
I´ll take a look at that thread,

I´ve finally managed to find the time to test the solution you mentioned with RC and the script, and is AWESOME

Thank you so much for the help!

We hope to make some nice renders, and improve them with this method as opposed of a simple texture
