Tint by Altitude

I need help setting up the tint by altitude effect. I want to have my trees become whiter as they cross the snow line. Can anyone break down the best way to accomplish this?

I've tried using a Forest Color map in the diffuse slot of a test material and got no color variation at the specified altitude. I've followed all the instructions in the effects library description and I can't get it to have any effect related to altitude.
Ideally I would use the a Forest Color map to make a black/white altitude mask for a CoronaMix map, but I'm missing something because I can't get a predictable result with anything I did.

I will try to explain, as this can be a little confusing.
Certain rules need to be followed for this to work.

Apply effect in viewport first:
Add effect to the list:

To adjust it in viewport set Material rollout "From" and "To" to 100.

"Altitude 0" is pivots position- Pink box height in my example:

I adjusted Altitude 50m and Range 50m as well:

Render is totally unexpected:

Lets change forest material:
3 important settings here:
Override Off
Slider set all the way to items
Blending mode Normal (I recommend this but once You are done with all the steps You can return to play with other modes)

Render: now we are getting somewhere:

Important: think of Tint by altitude as Mask by altitude- it is what You want in the first place ;)

Let setup material further using forestmap as mask:


We can replace simple color to new forest material with total control:

And final demo render:

Thank you so much for the detailed response!

The problem in my scene was the pivot and Xform of my mountain object. I reset the Xform and moved the pivot to the bottom of the slope and now I can at least control the tint by altitude. However, strangely, the "Altitude 0" point of the tint is way above the pivot. I'd attach the scene but it's gargantuan and now I am at least able to accomplish what I need thanks to your advice.
