Title: Tree Height Issue
Post by: OQ2133 on July 05, 2014, 06:15:36 PM
Hi,

I am a bit confused, no matter what internal units i have, or display units, when i add the free sample HQ trees such as the palms etc and attach them to a spline, they come in around 5m tall.

I have "get size from file" ticked, and all other settings as default.

I can use global scale to get them to look more realistic heights but surely they were modelled to a real scale? If so how can i get them to come in at that scale?

Thanks

Hi,

The height is correct: 5m for Canary Date Palm. You can check the original scenes at C:\Program Files (x86)\Itoo Software\Forest Pack Pro\lib\Free Models\HQPlants Free.

These models are included by courtesy of 3D Mentor (http://3dmentor.ru), so i cannot tell you what reference they used for modelling. According to wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoenix_canariensis), this palm is usually a bit higher, but 5m doesn't seem too wrong.

According to the wikipedia link you posted:

"Phoenix canariensis is a large solitary palm, 10–20 m (33–66 ft) tall"

(Which i guess explains why i need to global scale everything by 300-400 to get it to look right)

I assume that this is an issue more to do with 3rd party providers of accurately scaled models more than anything with the plugin then?

That's it. Forest just uses the model as it. In any case, you can scale the model in several ways:

1) Locally to the item selected in the Geometry List:

- Turn off "Use Object Dimensions", and adjust the size using "Width/Height" parameters.

2) Globally to all Forest objects in the scene:

- Once imported, unide and unlock the layer "forest_templates" where the models are stored.
- With a Forest object selected, use right click->Select Forest Custom Object.
- The 3D model is selected, scale it as desired.
- Select the Forest object again, click Display->Update All.
- Lock and hide the templates layer.

3) Persistent for all scenes:

- Creating a custom library (http://docs.itoosoft.com/display/FORESTPACK/Editing+a+library) and a copy of the item.
- Scale the model in the source Max scene.
- Use the new item  in your scenes.

I hope that helps.
