Long Render Times + where is forest material/colour download?
« on: September 04, 2012, 12:54:21 AM »
Hi all

Apolgoies in advance for the newb question.

Ive followed the grass tutorial and tried to apply it to a scene that im doing personally.
Now the plane ive applied it to is 80m x 160 metres and ive used the camera clipping.  Ive noticed when i render the times are blown out.  When i trierd to render the scene overnight, it was still rendering in the morning and the estimated time was another 46 hours lol.  Now i know im doing something very wrong.
Any ideas?

Also, i want to put some variation on the colour and i see the option for it, however I cant seem to find where to download the forest color/material?

Kinds Regards
S

Yes, definitively there is something wrong in your scene. Do you use VRay or Mental Ray ?

I just rendered a test scene using the grass tutorial, resizing up the scattering area to 200 x 200 m: render time was 2m 56s for VRay and 7m 30s for Mental Ray. (Forest Pro 3.9.4, VRay 2.30.01, Max 2012, I7 980x, 12 Gb. RAM)

Please, see the suggested rendering settings here: http://www.itoosoft.com/forestpack/reference/rendering.php, specially the Dynamic Memory Limit if you use VRay. If you don't find the problem, send us the scene and we will check it.

About Forest Color, it is a texture plugin. You will find it in the material editor. Or alternatively, use the "Material Optimizer" tool to apply it automatically (Forest->Material rollout): http://www.itoosoft.com/forestpack/reference/refmaterial.php

In the next days we will publish a new tutorial specifically about Forest Color.

Your scene renders pretty fast here (3m 25s), but i have not VRayEmbree installed (i got the missing plugin warning at load). This plugin is experimental, and if i remember well it does not support instancing. Probably it is creating all the problems in this case. Please, try removing vrayembree2013.dlo from your configuration.

Btw, you should increase the VRay Dynamic memory limit. It's set to 400 Mb., very low if you add complexity to the scene. See the rendering guide for the suggested settings.

Hi again

So all you did was open my scene and render it out and it took 3m25?

I updated the memory to 8000 (I have 12 gig of ram) and also have an i7 950 @ 3.07GHz with a GTX 460 graphics card.
Not sure if my PC isnt as fast as yours.

My scene is still rendering.  4 minutes into it the estimated time to finish is 15 minutes :(

Yes, i did render it using the default scene settings. But i'm missing some textures (see image), so would be some difference because this. If you send me all the textures (please by e-mail if including copyrighted files), i would repeat the test.

In any case, there is a significative difference between our CPUs. (980x has 6 cores, in this case overclocked at 3.8 Ghz).

ooh now im jealous of your system :) maybe i need to update my workstation.  Its about time i did that anyways!
those materials shuldnt make a difference as they arent in the scene, i was experimenting with trees initially and then removed them from the scene...

how long does it take you to render the vray grass tutorial scene?

Thanks for your  help

Just done it too - That scene too me 3m39

I experimented with this a little.  What I did was I went back to the rass  tutorial, studied and saved your Vray settings and then applied it to my scene.
Re-rendered with the same settings as your grass tutorial and my scene only took 5m12 - im very happy....

now to figure out why :)

Thanks for your help
