Forest assets on Network?
« on: February 01, 2017, 09:51:25 PM »
Is it possible to drop all the forest assets on a network drive for referencing? I've dropped the Forest .dlo into all the render nodes max folder - but now I realize that if I'm using any presets like the grass or gravel, they wont render.

ok - I figured out that I can put my library assets in a shared drive. But that doesn't seem to be the problem.

Is there more than the .dlo file that is needed for the nodes to render? I've also tried putting the VRay shader .dll files into the nodes max folder but still nada.

You must copy the .dlo in the "plugins" folder, not in the Max root folder. And the V-Ray shaders  (ForestVRay???.dll) in the Max root folder, or any folder accesible by the PATH variable.
For the initial test, i suggest to use a simple teapot scene without textures (just to be sure there are not missing external references), and other more complex scenes after that.

You can find all files used by Forest (except libraries) listed here.

Yep I did exactly that. Sorry my post must have been confusing. I had the .dlo in the plugins folder and the .dll files in the root. It wasn't until I ran the installer and picked render node that the node would render correctly.

Exactly like you mentioned - I had setup a teapot test which turned my focus from the library to my install of forestpro.

I had noticed in your documentation that you didn't mention being able to use the workstation files (the .dlo & .dlls) for the render nodes. Although for Railclone you did. So I thought maybe there might be more to the install - registry changes or something. I still haven't gotten the nodes to work just be dropping in the .dlo so we're manually running the installer on each one.

thanks

Well, i'm checking the Forest documentation and includes a note about copying files manually in render nodes, exactly here.

It should work without any registry entries, but there is a difference with RailClone: when setup program is not used, it's necessary to copy the distribution maps in some texture path. If not, it will not run.
Probably that was the problem.

In any case, i'm glad the problem is solved.
