Vray DR and ForestPro problem
« on: April 22, 2010, 04:26:01 PM »
My scene comprised of 5 different vrayproxies of bushes distributed over an undulating surface. Additionally, I had a 'box' bush copied along an undulating spline.

I cannot get either the vrayproxies that I used within the ForestPro objects to render, or the ForestPro objects themselves to render correctly when using distributed render(DR). Its as though ForestPro has corrupted the vrayproxies or something odd like that. In the same scene, if I manually place a few more proxies (using the same files) those bits render with DR just fine.

I've attached a couple of screengrabs to help explain.

The rendered image (with a simple override material applied) shows how my render nodes aren't rendering the forestpro objects, or the original vrayproxies that they are comprosed from. However, freshly created vrayproxies (using the exact same files) render just fine.

Any ideas????
Kind Regards,
Rich

I think that Forest is not working in the DR nodes.

How have you installed the plugin on them ?
Can you open the scene in a DR node and render it manually ?

I ran the same installer, but chose the option for a rendernode install only.

I cannot run max on these rendernodes to test the scene manually.

If the checkbox "Display->Hide Custom Objects..." is enabled, Forest hides the proxies before rendering, but this feature doesn't work with DR nodes (because an incompatibility with VRay). This may be part of the problem, please try disabling this option and tell me if something changes.

Besides this, must be some difference with Forest between the workstation and render nodes.

What version of Forest are you using ?
Have you verified that all computers have the same version?
Are you mixing 32bit and 64bit nodes ?

My problems seem to have now been resolved. I believe the problem may be related to the 'Hide Custom Objects' checkbox and XREF/DR scenes.

It seems that by hiding the original geometry from which the ForestPro objects was created, the issues went away. I think the seemingly random buckets I was seeing were actually in positions where these original vrayproxies were in line with (either in front of or behind) the actual ForestPro objects.

Thankyou for all your help.

On a related note, couldn't the vrayproxies used within a ForestPro object be sourced/picked from the 'external vraymesh files' rather than having to first bring them into the actual scene you are creating the ForestPro objects in? This might help work around this problem?

Rich

Great ;D. The behaviour of DR is a bit special and it's doesn't recognize the event to hide the objects in the DR nodes. We'll try to solve this issue in next versions.

About the use of external proxies, it's not supported in Forest by compatibility. The plugin is designed to use many types of objects: meshes, proxies or even RPC, and it must work with multiple renders as VRay, Mental Ray or Scanline. So, we prefer to use a common interface for all these posibilities, picking the source object from the scene.

Also, as alternative to the proxies workflow, remember that in Forest you can use any high-poly mesh from the scene, getting the same render performance (sometimes better). This saves you to handle tons of external proxy files and references, what may be useful in some situations.
