Vray, Onyx TreeStorm, Wind and GI
« on: September 16, 2010, 03:34:47 PM »
I've recently learned that we can plug TreeStorm trees with wind directly into ForestPro. Fantastic!

I am creating a walktrhough animation which includes a number of large trees that are animated in the wind. The animation is going to use a precalculated GI Solution using Vray. Obviously, as the trees move, a precalculated GI solution for them will not work well. I therefore need to have a separate lighting rig just for the trees - a direct light to represent the sun and a dome light to represent the skylight.

I also need to tell the trees NOT to generate or receive GI. How do I do this when they are embedded within a ForestPro object?
Kind Regards,
Rich

Do it in the Forest object: right-click->VRay properties->Generate/Receive GI.

Thanks. Presumably, I should uncheck 'visible to GI' as well?

I think this option is equivalent to uncheck both Receive/Generate GI, but i have not found find more information about it in the VRay help.

Hello Richard,
I'm very interested in your results as I'm struggling finding a good animated tree solution. Did it work out nice?
Also if we use ForestPro to randomly scatter Treestorm trees in a scene can they keep the correct direction of the wind and so on?
I know this thread is old, so if anyone knows a better way to manage wind and several trees for high quality animations please post it here :)

Hi

Here's a link to the animation we produced - pretty poor quality I'm afraid due to the incompetance of the web designers!
http://www.pembrokebridgingcenturies.org/news-and-views/3d-animation.php

The animated trees worked 'ok', but I think they could be much better. We learned a lot. So far, I have found no other way to have animated trees in a scene. One of the main problems we faced (and still do) with Onyx wind is getting it to look strong enough to see, yet not so strong that it looks like a storm!

Also, the resultant vrayproxy files are HUGE!

In terms of wind direction, obviously you can't rotate all the trees randomly otherwise the wind will appear to be coming from everywhere all at once. Probably best to random rotate over a 20 or 30 degree limit I guess.

Good luck. Trees are hard. Animated trees are harder!
Kind Regards,
Rich

yeah... looks kind of like the Vue version of windy trees.. stiff, twitchy and uncontrollable. The presentation is good enough that I don't think you even need the trees to move. Thank you for posting this though as I was curious about the Onyx/Treestorm results.
