Forest Pack installation affecting file open/save times
« on: July 28, 2016, 09:59:33 AM »
Hi there,

It's been a few months since we've had to use Forest Pack, but I had to open an old file that used FP Pro so I installed the latest version (v5.1.0) and updated our license server (v1.20). Everything worked fine but later on in the day I noticed that a relatively simple scene file I was working on would take 5+ minutes to open (from a local SSD drive) and 5+ minutes to save (it is less that 200MB). Renders we also taking much longer to start and would hang at the end. The only change to our configuration was Forest Pack, but as I wasn't using it in this scene I assumed that couldn't be it. However, after exhausting every avenue I could think of, I uninstalled Forest Pack on my machine and everything was back to normal.

I thought that maybe the problem could come from the plugin trying to connect to license server and struggling but I checked and it always resolves the license. I need to use FP on a project very soon but I'm hesitant to re-install it because I don't want to slow down the other jobs I'm working on. Any ideas what it could be or how to fix it?

We're running 3ds Max 2016, V-Ray 3.40.02

Hi,

That's really strange behaviour. Is that specific for that scene or you can reproduce it with any new scene too?

I would suggest you to check your scene for the "Retimers issue" as there is a known 3ds Max's bug, which is affecting XRef objects (because Forest Pack is using XRefs it's slowing it down). Feel free to you to use the Cleaner script did by Andreas Meissner, also the Clean Retimers script works very well. If that's the case, on Autodesk's Community you can find more about this 3ds Max's bug and how to remove it using MAXSript (apart of scripts listed above).

To double check that's not a licensing service related issue (it shouldn't be), you can change temporarily the license mode on your computer to Stand-alone mode, using "Start Menu->Itoo Software->Forest Pack Pro->Change License Mode" (you'll get error, but no "license search" will be performed and this way you can compare if there is any difference).

Anyway, please feel free to send us your scene to check it here. Thanks in advance.

Best regards,

Well, after re-installing FP Pro the problem has not occurred again! I have absolutely no idea what happened there. If it rears its ugly head again, I will immediately send the problem file over.
