Cant add new surface to FP object and other such woes
« on: April 10, 2018, 01:13:40 AM »
I've had very little experience so far working with FP6 - currently i have installed 6.0.4b. So far, i'm seeing some really wierd things. For example, in an existing scene, if i create a new plane object (at coordinates 0,0,0) and add a FP object (by clicking on the plane) I simply cannot get the FP objects to appear on the plane. Instead, they are created way, way off in the distance. No adjustments to the FP settings can fix it.
A few days ago i had successfully managed (i think it was with 6.0.3) to create a FP object. However, if i now try to add another surface it wont work. My only option is to go to the original surface geometry and attach the additional surface to it (so instead of having 2 seperate surfaces its just 1). That seems to work. Any time i try to add an additional object it just gets completely ingored (even though it is visible in the list of surfaces).
The only workaround I can come up with is to create a new scene, make a new simple plane and use it as a surface for a FP object. Then i import in the actual geometry that i need - attach it to the plane object so they become one object. Then go back to my actual scene i am working on and import in the new objects i just created. I have to make sure to choose to overwritee any existing FP items for this to work. So, once its in, I can then delete the plane from the surface geometry and i then have a usable FP object.
yikes, its pretty bad !

Hi,

I've done some additional testing with Surfaces in the FP 6.0.4b (on 3ds Max 2018 & 3ds Max 2019), but I can't reproduce any similar troubles here.

If you'll be able to reproduce it on a minimal scene, which you can send us, it would be great. Also please specify your actual software configuration (3ds Max & renderer versions). Thanks in advance for any further comments on this issue you can share with us.

Best regards,

Hi,

Thanks for your swift reply. Please double check surface normals of the XReffed object (all polygons should be facing upwards).

Regarding the second video: I would suggest you assigning any Custom Object – or changing the Template used (to for example a Simple 3D Tree). Might be, you’ve moved accidentally the Pivot Point of the One Plane Template object? If so, to fix it, you can delete all content from the forest_templates layer, which will be recreated automatically.

As mentioned previously, having a minimal scene for analyzing would be ideal.

Best regards,

Hi,

I can confirm second/similar issue, and some camera issue too. Scene was created with FP5.4.1, then I installed last beta 6.0.4. Simplified scene from my last project is in attachment, max 2018.

UB8512, In Your case deleting forest_templates layer contents and recreating Forest object solves the problem.

BG2291, I would like to see Your scene for further investigation.

Deleting forest_templates helped me only in case I want to create completelly new forest object with new custom preset.

For existing 4 FP objects I tried this:
1. export presets from four existing FP objects
2. delete them
3. delete forest_templates
4. create 4 new FP objects
5. import presets from files
6. still misplaced items on surface

..so any other solution than manually create 4 FP objects from scratch?

Hi again,

I know what is causing issue from my previous post. Rotating distribution map does not cover whole surface with items. There was no issue in FP 5.4.x
