Problems with old scenes 3dsmax 2014
« on: December 10, 2015, 03:26:06 PM »
Recently I installed Beta 5.02, but unfortunatly I had to switch back to version 4.41 because I had a problem rendering in max 2014 with an old scene.
I'm using Vray 3.2, and the scene is very big (12 km x 12 km)... when using 5.02 beta version, the renderer freezes when ''buiding embree acelerator'' stage in Vray.
If I make some new forest objets in a new scene, it works nice.
Using 4.41 version works perfectly.
Any idea of whats the problem here?

Hi,

Would you mind to send us that scene (or ideally a minimal scene where you can reproduce this kind of troubles) through WeTransfer to support@itoosoft.com to analyse it here?

Thanks in advance for your collaboration, your feedback is very important to us.

Best regards,

I'm also testing to create a forest in a 5km x 5km plane with three diferent forest objects in 3ds max 2016 and I have the same problem... this time rendering with Vray 3.3 beta... it freezes at ''building embree static accelerator'' stage....

Thanks for the scene. We can reproduce the problem here.

I think it's caused by the V-Ray version used to compile each Forest release: FP 4.4.1 was compiled with V-Ray 3.1, and FP 5.0.2 with 3.2 and 3.3.
According to the V-Ray release notes, embree support was added in V-Ray 3.2, so probably is not used while rendering with FP 4.4.1

Unfortunately we cannot change that, so i suggest to use Forest 5 with the latest update of V-Ray 3.3.
Testing your scene with 3.30.02, embree build time is acceptable (only a few seconds here). We'll do more tests using large scenes, and with the upcoming V-Ray updates.

I'm afraid I'm having the same problem in max 2016 with the last build of Vray 3.3 and FP 5.0.2.... I tested it with a ground of 5 km x 5 km.

Please, would you test this test scene ? It includes a tree mesh and a proxy (same geometry).
Embree building time is a bit slower with the proxy, but nothing critical. Only a few seconds here (Xeon 1650@4Ghz, 64 Gb.RAM).

According to the Intel notes, Embree algorithm is optimized for a specific set of CPU instructions (SSE, AVX, etc), so render time change drasticallly depending of the CPU used.
In any case, render algorithms are embedded in the V-Ray core, there is not much we can do about it (Forest just scatters the items for the render engine). If render is too slow, you would considere to disable Embree in the V-Ray options.
