Spline Offset Knots
« on: November 18, 2019, 06:57:11 PM »
I would like to know if you could add a new checkbox in Spline Offset to create knots on the original spline's interpolated curve points. I would like to have the results where the extra sub-splines always have knots that line up with ones in the original spline. Right now, if you use a shape that's using interpolation, the results will look correct but the amount of knots in the added subsplines does not match those in the source spline.

Now that I think about it, there should be two optional methods for the knots/interpolation:

Option 1: Insert Knots into Original Spline at interpolated knot points

or

Option 2: Match knot count and interpolation of added sub splines to original.

See attached image where the highlighted spline (in red) is the original Circle shape. Notice that the internal subsplines added by spline offset has a different knot count from the source. I want to be able to keep them consistent by choosing the options above.

Hi Shawn,

Thanks for the feedback and the suggestions. I will pass this request on to the developers for consideration. As this is a free plugin, It may take a while to be considered and may depend on the limitations of the libraries we use but I'll update here once we have news.

All the best,

Paul

Just to add to this - option 2 is achievable now if you follow these steps:

  • Set Distance - for example 1m
  • Set the Offset to the inverse of the distance - for example -1m
  • Disable Keep Original Spline
I hope that helps.

All the best,

Paul.

Paul,

Thanks for this tip. That option does mimic what I'm asking for the most part. However, it actually failed in the actual usage I was using which was a Circle + Spline Offset with a negative Offset and a Positive Z Translation Value. In that case, the first ring is always offset away from the location of the original circle.

I can work around by having a second circle shape. So it's not the end of the world.

But it would be nice to get those extra options.

In any event, thank you all for this freebie! :)
