overlapping and stretching vs out-of-memory
« on: February 17, 2011, 02:46:07 AM »
I am currently trialing this package on "Autodesk 3D Studio Max R9 - SP2" and using it to build a terrain which is required to be 2km x 200km with each face having the dimension 70m x 50m. Having this to scale in 3dsmax makes it quite an intense scene so I am working with a very small section (see attachment), and running into overlapping and stretching issues. Whenever I start to adjust any parameters 3dsmax crashes with out-of-memory issues.

Wondering the best way to utilise RailClone Lite to achieve the desired results.

Thanks!

Are you using a smoothed path or do you want to create corners and bevels ?

In a smoothed path using large segments, there is not possible to avoid overlapping because it's a problem inherent to the geometry. For bevels (as shown in the image), use Corner vertices and enable 'Bevel' mode in the Geometry rolllout.

The crashing issues are probably caused by the size of the mesh. How many faces has the RailClone object ?, Are you using Max 9 32 or 64 bit ?

In RailClone 1.1 beta we have added support for VRay, allowing to render objects of virtually any size. But by now, these features are available only to Pro users.

Whilst waiting for a response I found a solution which was to create a Plane about 250km in Length and 4km in Width. I added a turbosmooth modifier to get the faces about 30m x 30m each and then using a PathDeform to manipulate the shape to the spline which created the same overlapping (see original image) however it did not crash where as with RailClone Lite it would crash with about 10km in Length and 4km in Width.

I purposely made the Width 4km because I then added a Relax modifier and set the iterations to about 500 which removed ALL the overlapping but obviously shrunk the mesh in the process. It shrunk the Width from 4km to about 2.5km so just trimmed the edges using the Loop tool and presto perfect mesh.

I am using Autodesk 3D Studio Max R9 SP2 - 32bit.

Thanks again for your response and I am sorry I was unable to use RailClone to be able to do this.
