2 RailClones with shared parameters
« on: September 11, 2015, 04:31:25 PM »
Is it possible to have two different RailClone objects that are wired to the same parameters?

I created one RailClone that creates road striping, and another that places triangles along the roads to act as car placeholders.  I then use the placeholders to place cars using Forest Pro's Tree Editor with the RailClone triangles as Reference Objects.  I have parameters for number of lanes (L and R) as well as lane widths that need to sync between RailClone objects.

I WAS going to just create one Massive RailClone definition that would do both at the same time, but then I cannot isolate the triangles for Forest Pro.

If this is not possible, I'd like to add it as a feature request.  Perhaps with scripting??

Hi,

Thanks for the feature request. This is something we've discussed internally and it's on our wishlist for a future release.  As a possible solution you could try combining the styles as you suggest and then introduce a toggle that swaps between the road striping and the markers. In that way you could set up the roads, turn on the car markers, place the cars using FP, and finally turn the markers off again. See the video and the attached file for a demo.

Alternatively,  unless you are using Forest Colour to randomise the car models textures you could always use RailClone to distribute the cars. It has the same instancing power as Forest Pack and you could easily make changes to the traffic without having to reapply the Forest. You can see an example of a style like this here.

I hope that helps, please let me know if I can help further.

Many thanks,

Paul

Great idea!  I think this will work for us.  We prefer to use Forest Pro for the cars since the material setup is WAY easier for random colors of many detailed car models.

Hey guys,

Out of curiosity, was looking to see if anything had progressed on this nowadays with the latest releases to share parameters between RC objects?

I've been making some elaborate buidling generators but sometimes for simplicity or bespoke building designs I find myself cutting and pasting generators between RC objects to not end up with a super massive file that's a little easier to read, especially across the office where maybe not everyone is as well versed.

Thanks,
Matt

There is no official integration within RailClone. It's possible to link exported parameters with max feature "Wire parameters". You can read about it here.
