It doesn't seem that Railclone support vertex normal !
« on: August 24, 2016, 04:17:41 PM »
Hello every one,

Some models were created in RHINOCEROS 5 in my big project. They were all imported into MAX in OBJ format which contained vertex normal.
I tried to use these objects as segment objects in Railclone 2.5. The vertex normal seems to be totally corrupted in the final result of the whole Railclone object.
It doesn't seem that Railclone support vertex normal (such as some objects with "edit normal modifier") in segment object, does it ?
Can you show me some workaround ? I need the right vertex normal in the final result badly.

I'm hope you can understand me and help me. :'( :'(

Hi,

Thanks for reporting this, I can reproduce the issue here. We'll look into this and see what can be done. In the short term you should find that converting the RC object to instances using RailClone tools is an easy workaround that will retain your modified normals.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any further questions.

Many Thanks,

Paul

Thanks for your quick reply.
I know 3DSMAX is weak in handling vertex nomal. There would be remain some problems in some objects even I used the Railclone Tools if the object was not a instance. (such as bent objects and clipped objects)
I hope you will fix this problem soon.

I'm having a very similar issue with Max created geo. just made a thread about it since it doesn't appear a solution was posted. was there any sort of update to this?

If I Add a modifier that validates the vertex normals fixes it, but i don't want any modifiers on my final RC so it's easier for production use with multiple people.

Hi,

The "Vertex Normal support" it's still pending and unfortunately it doesn't look like something that can be done easily in a short time period. To be honest, as the overall 3ds max's support of this feature has several limitations and in many cases these will be reset (like in some cases when attaching / detaching Editable Mesh objects, applying some modifiers (like the Slice one), non-compatibility with the Editable Patch objects etc.), we're not even sure, if there'll be a suitable solution for our plug-in integration maintaining the compatibility with all actual (and new / under development) features. Thanks for your comprehension.

Best regards,
