Title: Bugs or user error? Vertex Colour & Updating Presets...
Post by: Alex.S on May 06, 2016, 12:03:32 PM
New to RailClone, very much enjoying it, I've run into a couple of minor issues, which could be bugs or user error...

If I have segments with vertex colour set and others with out vertex colour information at all then I end up with corruption of the vertex colour channel. (Objects with out vertex colour information receive a different colour rather than defaulting to white).

I don't suppose this is something that might be fixed? I know I can fix it myself by going back and updating the base objects and I'm doing this, however this brings me onto the second issue I'm having.

I've created a preset and I'm developing it in a separate max file and it's all setup in my library, but then if I got to a scene that uses the preset - and I have multiple objects using that preset, it doesn't seem to reimport any updated segments that I've changed, unless I delete all RC objects and recreate them? Would maybe nice to have an option which resyncs the preset from library with out reseting the parameters etc.

Hi Alex,

We're glad you're enjoying using RailClone. Thanks for reporting these issues, it's always helpful to get feedback.

I can reproduce the Vertex Colour behaviour you mention. I'll add that to our to-do list to see if it can be fixed. As you've mentioned the solution otherwise is to simply add a Vertex Colour modifier to the source geometry and it'll automatically set the Vertex colours to white.

As for the suggestion for linking to the library. I'm afraid at the moment this isn't possible though we have plans to include a way for multiple RailCone objects to share parameters and segments that could be useful for this purpose. I'll add your suggested usage to out wish list to see if it can be done.

It's also possible to import an updated RailClone object from the library and use the Copy To buttons to apply them to the other RailClone objects in the scene. Use the Copy To button (http://docs.itoosoft.com/download/attachments/10092632/rc_button_copyto.png?version=1&modificationDate=1428479833000&api=v2) to copy it to a single object or Copy To Multiple (http://docs.itoosoft.com/download/attachments/10092632/rc_button_copytomult.png?version=1&modificationDate=1428479833000&api=v2) to update many RailClone objects at once.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any further questions.

Many Thanks,

Paul

I think you're missing my point on the later issue.

It's a case of when I update the profile the scene doesn't work correctly and if I re-apply and load the profile it still doesn't work.

Let me give you an example, I just made a fence barrier for a race track profile, I then exported the profile out to a separate max file and added it to my library and then applied that profile to objects. Everything working ok up to here.

Next I decided to add some more detail, I wanted to add some optional loudspeakers that can be added onto every other fence pole etc. I updated the separate max file, and try to reload the profile, but it wont work. The extra objects that I added just wont load, unless I remove all the fence objects I made and recreate the RC objects from scratch...

Let me add some screenshots to help explain...

In the image "capture.png" ... you can see I have two fence objects. They use the same profile. I load the profile source material, and change the material id of the base fence part that i've circled. When I load backup the original scene again with two fences, the profile is still recognized as everything is okay, even though I've already updated the profile to have a slightly different base object.

If I try to reload the profile for both objects, the new object does not get imported. The fence material stays the same.

Then in the image "capture2.png", I've deleted the object so there is only one object in the scene using the profile, and I load the profile again. And voila! The material updates on the main fence.... (And my parameters reset to default...)

btw, if I make logic changes, and reload the profile, the profile reloads okay.

Hi,

With your help we've identified the source of such behaviour and we're looking into it to check what can be done to avoid similar issues (where more than one RC object uses a modified style).

Meanwhile, a possible way how to avoid that would be to use different names to import that style correctly to the scene and than use the Copy Style to Multiple (http://docs.itoosoft.com/display/RAILCLONE/Styles#Styles-TocopyastyletoanexistingRailCloneObject) button to update the rest of your RC objects.

Big thanks for your collaboration, your feedback is very important to us.

Best regards,
