Hello,
I would like to model a ceiling from an individual light using the 2D array generator.
how can I make out that every lights are spaced from each other ? In my file, it's not the case. They are distributed 2 by 2 ...
Can you help me ?

Thanks for your query. Using both the X and y evenly inputs should create a evenly spaced rows and columns of lights like this:



But it is my guess that you are trying to create an evenly spaced grid with one light on each grid intersection? There are a number of ways to solve this problem, perhaps the easiest is to simple wire the light to the default input and use padding to create spaces between the lights. The disadvantage of this is that you will have to adjust the values manually to obtain an even distribution. In this example I've exported the values so that it's easier to adjust without opening the style editor.



Alternatively, If you'd like to take advantage of RailClones adaptive modes to automatically space the lights, try the following:

  • Set the generator's Rules>default segment>mode to adaptive
  • Wire the light segment to the Y Evenly input
  • Now you should be able to use the Y Evenly distance to control the distance vertically.
  • Use equal values in the left/right padding to control the distance horizontally. This may need adjusting slightly to minimise the segment stretching.


I've attached a Max file with both techniques mentioned above in a single style for you to look at.

It's exactly what i want. And it's a good exercice for me because I had never used the export function. I have to train me a bit to understand the value of this parameter.

I have another question about this ceiling in the case of a multiple floor. 
What is the "best" solution for overlaying splines? Should I duplicate the 2D array generator in the same railclone and connect each one  to each spline?

Hi Pierre,

There are a couple of ways you could do that, as you suggest you could duplicate the generator for each floor or alternatively you might find it easier just to duplicate the existing railclone object, one for each floor, and assign a different spline for each.

If your floor levels are evenly spaced and the same in plan you could also nest two spline together to create the whole thing from 2 splines. In the screenshot I've used the same 2d array but instead of using a single mesh as the light segment it references a second linear array with the original light mesh used in the evenly input. I've attached the file so you can see what I mean.

 You are smart :) I didn't realize that I can use a railclone inside another one.  It's a good method.
