Title: Create This Limestone Wall
Post by: Keith678 on September 29, 2023, 03:23:53 pm
Hi,

I'm trying to create this wall texture (image_001).

I'm thinking of a few ways to build it. There are some good examples of how to approach it here - https://docs.itoosoft.com/railclone/next-steps-with-railclone/2-tips-for-creating-parts-with-railclone

I was hoping to create this using one segment similar to the Railclone preset 'Concrete Cladding Randomised'.

So in other words we start with a single segment of 100mm x 100mm then each segment would be increased or decreased by the power of 2 (100mm,200mm,400mm,800mm) then scattered randomly.

I'm not sure which would be the best approach and could do with some advice.

Sorry there would be 100mm x 100mm but then there are also 100mm x 200mm and 200mm x 400mm and so on

Hi,

If the rows are overlappingand distribution is fully randomised like in your pictures then I'm afraid the best way is to precompose them into blocks that will work with the RC grid, similar to that link your mentioned to the docs. If there is a pattern then it might be possible, but fully randomised if unlikely to work.

Cheers,
Paul

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the response. Yeah I get what you mean.

I'll see what I come up with and maybe post my response if I come up with a solid solution.

I think it is always better to use a displace for these purposes, over which you have very simple control.

@realviz

Yeah obsoletely! The big problem is we have a view which has such an acute angle that we see about 40 metres of the wall and repetition is very obvious then. I could use a uvwrandimzor to help but this has such a particular pattern the blend might be harsh. If you know of a texture online that has this pattern that would be great.

Actually, I might even hop out with the camera this weekend and try and take a few pictures for this.

I've attached the textures I'm currently working with

Hi,
If you want to do it with railclone there may be a way, I tried to express my opinion in the pictures below. finally; After importing each of the stones into railclone as separate segments, they can be used with the 'compose' operator. In this way, there is a chance to randomize the materials.

Segments > Compose operator > Transform operator (For Padding) and randomized materials.

ooooh very interesting. I was just about to tackle this very soon and this might be the best approach.

Thanks a million for your help. I should have some time tomorrow to tackle it. I'll let you know if I do.

Okay,

So I've created the wall and attached it here if anyone wants to have a look.

Issue I have now is how to rotate the whole thing so it's a wall instead of a floor?

Hi,

A2S Generator > Auto align > XY or to Spline

Hi  Arslan,

Perfect. I actually found that out but realised that my clipping spline was drawn incorrectly.

Where we have a change in the wall direction/bend in the wall this breaks.

If we draw two separate spline areas and attach them it works but creates a gap in between the wall see image_001.

If we just have one area it shoots off in all directions (image_002)

I think it would be better to use two separate splines. 'reverse spline' should solve the gap problem. So the problem seems to be caused by the spline.

Hi,

The reverse does work just need to make sure the spline clipping area is where the wall begins and not ends.

Thanks you.

Hi,

I'm going insane! Why doesn't this work?

I've applied the railclone object to a single spline which has multiple splines within it for a wall.

However, some areas just don't work. I've tried reversing the spline changing the first vertex on each spline but to no avail.

Image_001 shows the gaps appearing and mage_002 shows my orientation. All splines start in the same direction with the first vert being on the top left of each spline.

I've attached the file if anyone can figure out this issue.

I can make the segments appear if i change the first vertex but then the orientation is wrong.

Rotating the z rotation makes all the segments appear but of course then the orientation is incorrect.

I think I fixed it by using a different A2S generator. I hope it works for you.

That's brilliant well done.

All in one Railclone which is always nice.

I somewhat understand the transform and how they push and pull the segments but could you explain your workings in the image I've attached. Just want to fully understand what's going on so I can reproduce it in the future.

My English is not very good, I tried to explain with screenshots.

As a basic approach; It would be easier if you make these adjustments on a simple rectangular spline first and then try to work on the main spline.

That's amazing. You went above and beyond. It makes perfect sense.

Thanks again. Now I'm just figuring out the best approach for materials. I've already hit a wall, no pun intended, where the edges are visible on the object for some reason.

But don't worry I've already taken a lot of your time.

Thanks to everyone that helped. Happy with how it came out. Just need to fix a few glitches with the segments and should be good.
