Disappearing geometry?
« on: July 03, 2015, 02:33:11 PM »
Ok this is odd.

I was working on a project today and after a while a noticed some RC objects disappeared.
I heard its a problem with pirated versions of RailClone, but you know its not my case.
It was fine in RailClone 2.4.6 and started in 2.4.8 and continued in 2.5.

Some of the objects actually behave like this:
1. If you select the RC object it will show everything is OK.
2. It will not render and after render finishes it will show as NO GEOMETRY.

See file attached.

I'm using 3Ds Max Design 2014 SP5, V-Ray 3.20.02 (Nightly 25882 6/6/2015) and Windows 8.1 Pro.

No, it's not a license problem. For some reason the segments were not saved correctly, but unfortunately i cannot find what happened exactly.
There are several processes in RailClone that modify segments and parameters on load and save, to convert scenes from previous RC versions and so. I think something failed with that, but is very unusual.

There is not much we can do in this case, because the problem is not traceable. But please, tell me if that happens again.

I noticed that sometimes 3Ds Max fails to save the scene. Somekind of write error that forces me to save-as a separate document. I also noticed that railclone is somehow attracted to it.
However I don't know if its a save error that crashes railclone or a save error due to railclone fail... ???

I never experienced these kinds of save crashes, and I think they started this month when I installed V-Ray 3.20.02..

I doubt that RailClone would cause a save error (we've never come across this problem before), but definitively if the save process is not completed correctly, the RailClone objects can be corrupted, as happened in this case.

I think we could include some safe checking, to detect this condition and fix it. Obviously that will not help with the save errors, but at least will not affect to the RC objects.

Sorry.. Accidentally edited your comment instead of reply...  :-X

The save errors are not really an issue, since it does not crash max or corrupts the scene (except the RC geometry of course)
I really hope you can do anything about it  :)

Thank you!

Hello,
I have exactly the same problem. I just do an incremental save in max. There is no crash or any warning while saving a max file with RC object. but sometimes there is only spline left with big RC logo and all the properties of RC are gone. If i just reset everything without closing max and again apply RC and save it, this will not work. I have to close 3dsMax and open a new one.
I have to convert RC in mesh to save the object :(
i hope there is any solution for this or an update.

Thank you  :)

Hi, please send us to support@itoosoft.com a test scene with one of those broken RC objects.  Just to be sure it's the same problem.
Thanks,

Hello,
I have send you an email.

Thanks, we have received the file. But your case is different: the RC objects were created with a non-legitimate license. I just sent you the details by e-mail.

Hello again,

Is there any news about this issue? It still happens once in a while.
Also noticed that right before my geometry disappear, railclone will show that the maximum number of faces is reached.
Any attempt to change values in the Display rollout will cause 3Ds Max to freeze until the end of time.
Must mention I don't do anything to cause this to appear, it is fully random... just select a library set, apply to line and after a while it just happens.

I am still working with the same machine as before, but I upgraded the OS:
Windows 10 Pro.
3Ds Max 2016.
Same V-Ray 3.20.02 (I had some crashes with 3.20.03 that are related to VIZPARK's XMAP plugin, but its a different case) and I don't want to experiment with the nightly builds of 3.25.
Railclone 2.5

Hi, the fix is ready for the next update. Anyway, this would be a different issue, because the original problem should not show any limit error.

When it happens again, please try to save the RailClone object (and its associated geometry) in a separate scene before Max freezes.
To be sure all dependencies are saved, turn on "Select Influences" in the Max Selector dialog, and reselect the RailClone object. That will select all required objects.
