Hi,

For a gabion wall here are a couple of approaches we've found useful in the past:

  • Use two generators, one for the stones and one for the cage. The cage is relatively straightforward but for the stones I would model segments of stones with interlocking edges to ensure there are no obvious seams. To create variation in the stones it will be necessary to create a number of interlocking sections and then randomise them in RailClone. For an example of this see "Gabion Wall Solution 1.max" file attached
  • Use a RailClone object to create the cage and a second RailClone object to create very simple low poly wall where you would like the stones to be. Set this so that it does not render and then create a Forest object, set it to UV mode and use the low poly wall as a scatter surface. This technique is much more efficient and has the added benefit of allowing you to use Forest Colour to add even more variation. For an example of this see "Gabion Wall Solution 2.max" file attached.

The files can be downloaded from here, they are max 2014 format.

I hope that helps but please let me know if you have any further questions.

Thanks!

Hi!,

RailClone uses grid-like arrays so it's difficult to create a completely randomised and chaotic pattern one stone at a time. My usual solution is to create the illusion of randomised stones by "pre-composing" them into segments of interlocking geometry. For example by creating tetris-like blocks of random stones like this.

You can then use a Randomise operator to add these to an A2S array. The blocks are designed to interlock in an attempt to hide visible rows and columns. The more how have the less likely you are to see repetition and in the style you can also use Mirror and Transform operators to create even more randomisation. There's more information about this and some example files you can download in this forum post: http://forum.itoosoft.com/index.php?topic=2905.msg11141#msg11141 . Although this isn't for a gabion wall the same principles would apply except that you would also use a second generator for the wire mesh.

A similar approach is used in example1 from my previous post, please let me know if you'[re not able to download it.

Many thanks!

Hi, is that "gabion" file still available - the link is dead. Because i'm searching right now for exact the same :-)
iToo has probably the best support & community i know !!

I'm using it with Max 2019 & Vray 6

Hi,

Because of the file size, it can't be attached (attaching at least the second possible solution), but please feel free to download it from the following site: http://d.pr/f/LwGu2

Hope that helps.

Best regards,
