edit tree (rail clone)
« on: April 08, 2015, 08:06:22 PM »
Hi,
because I use Forest Pack Pro too I'd like to know if I can edit, move or delete just one single instance or group of them.
In Forest Pack Pro I can delete or move temporarily one single tree or instanced object because I don't want to show it during that particular render.
In Rail Clone Pro I have to bake the entire array  (preserving the rail clone object), delete the parts that I don't want to render, delete all the instances, rebuild the sequence.
Probably adding a polyedit modifier I can do the same but I lose the instancing system and the point cloud visualization.
Any suggestion?

Hi, I'm afraid it's not possible to edit segments individually.
Unlike to Forest, in RailClone each segment depends of their predecessors, so it would be very problematic to rebuild the object with this limitation.

The only solution without loosing instancing may be using RailClone Tools. If the geometry is not huge, it allows you to generate the instances, edit, render and go back easily.

Ok, I understand.
Probably a mask node could help.
Imagine to create a long strip, I define an area with a spline (as we do in Forest Pack). The software should detect what elements stay inside this closed area. Automatically will add dummies or hide the elements inside this area.

Hi,

RailClone is able to use a spline as a clipping area if that helps. You can use a closed spline to either include or exclude geometry based on a boolean operation.

To use it follow these steps:

  • Add a new Spline node
  • Wire the new Spline node to the Clipping input node of an A2S or L1S generator

  • With the A2S or L1S Generator selected go to the Properties Editor and and set the Clipping Mode to Include or Exclude as desired.

  • Close the Style editor. Go to the Base Objects rollout in the 3DS Max plugin, select the clipping item from the list and choose the spline from the scene.

Hope that helps, Many thanks.

Well what would be so difficult to take the chosen element of the array, read out its bounding box parameters and fill in instead a null object with corresponding padding parameters and to copy out one element as a editable poly..  shouldnt be that hard ore am i wrong..
