Title: Feature Request - Split segments on different layers
Post by: Morne on March 21, 2022, 12:02:57 PM
Hi Guys

We're using RC more and more for simple objects, however, theres an issue with RC where it doesnt fit comfortbly into our workflow. For stills, we typically render glass as its own pass, however if this is in a RC object it's not possible to hide/unhide the glass component easily, especially in multiple objects/styles
If we could have window glass panes on its own layer, that would make things simple as then we can simply hide/unhide/isolate that layer...

I did ask for this a few years before, and the answer was simply that its not possible.
Has anything changed since then?

Hi,

No, it's not possible. For Max, RailClone is an unique object, which cannot be separated in different layers.
I'm sorry, but that will not change. This limitation is due to the Max architecture.

Hi Morne,

Could you maybe use the VrayMtlSelect pass to render the glass in an RC object? https://docs.chaos.com/display/VMAX/VRayMtlSelect

Cheers,

Paul

Hi Paul. There's no problem getting a mask out for the glass, the problem is that we need it as a complete separate pass.
IE, in the main render, it should not have glass at all, and then in a 2nd render, only the glass

Ah - OK. The VrayMtlSelect would give you the second pass, but obviously not the first. Could you perhaps use a Material ID toggle to switch the glass off using a Material with a black opacity mask to turn the material off for the first pass?
Cheers,
Paul

I could yes, but this quickly gets complicated across mutliple objects and materials/sub-materials
Not to mention updating the model from filelinks
