I have an architectural scene which is around 550 mb I am trying to reduce the file size
I am replacing many objects with forest and railclone wherever possible
Just curious whether railclone helps in reducing the 3ds max file size
I know it reduces the ram usage by building the geometry at the render time however it produces geometry either by instancing or the other way
suggest is their any work around to cut down the file size

You do not mention the version of Max you are using so these could be wasted time, as newer versions of Max, have cured or fixed some of the problems that caused file sizes to suddenly become very large.. Anyway
one neat trick is to do this.
Merge your scene into a New Scene
Also depending on your Max version there are a couple of other things to try
1) Type this single line into the Maxscript listener (must be all one single line) then hit enter
t=trackviewnodes;n=t[#Max_MotionClip_Manager];deleteTrackViewController t n.controller;gc()
Then save the scene, see if it is smaller
2) Go here and get this MaxScript
http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/cleaner
Hope one of these helps

Hi, RailClone geometry is generated only at render time, using instances or meshes (when instancing is not possible).
In the scene are stored only the segments, so required space is minimal. You should notice a large improvement converting your objects to RC.

thanks for the reply
I am using max 2017 with vray 3.5 RC 2.7.5 FS 5.3.2
cleaner script is not helping
I am working on railclone and forest conversion

One thing I have noticed that makes file sizes very large is the assets themselves. Assets should be used in such a way that they are x-ref objects, so they are not actually present in the scene. One tree model can be huge, so if you merge it into your master scene it will make your file huge. But if you use it as an x-ref object, it does not become part of the master file, despite being visible in the file. I think you should be able to set the forest pack presets to x-ref, which should help with file size.

You are talking about ForestPack, but the same is true in RailClone too. Generally less poly-dense assets are used in RC, but certainly, some styles can get huge and benefit from xrefing.
