How to create an uneven woven fence
« on: March 16, 2017, 07:43:57 PM »
Hi guys,

So i have nailed Forest Pro, but for some reason I just can't get my head around Railclone. I'm dying to get the hang of it as I know how useful it can be. My client has requested the following grid-like woven structure in an ongoing project, so I reckon this is one for Railclone.

I would greatly appreciate some advice on where to start.  Because they are using the material in various places all over the resort project, I would love to have something parametric that I can control using different splines or surfaces.

The emphasis is that it is uneven and retains its 'rough' nature. It will need to also retain the 'frayed' edges...also uneven.

To be honest I don't even know where to start. Perhaps if it was clean and straight it would be simple, but the 'wonkiness' of the different strands is throwing me.

Thanks for all the help guys,
Terri

I forgot to add that I will need to include the hessian ties at each intersection of a vertical and horizontal strand.

I am busy modeling 4 or 5 verticals now, which I'm assuming I can use as the horizontals too. I will also model the 'frayed' ends separately. I'm guessing two Array 2Ss are needed? One for the horizontal beams and one for the vertical ones?

ok so this is where I am now.

Have modeled 2 different sets of fronds - one set a bit wonky as should be, and the other perfectly straight to test. This image is using the straight fronds. I have added some variation in translation and rotation to give the randomised look. Now I'm stuck as to how to get the intersections to meet up neatly and to do all of this using the wonky strands. I made sure when modeling the wonky strands that the top and bottom were unmoved so as to create clean joins...but didn't seem to work very well.

Plus there's the hessian knots to tie on top of it all...

Quite proud of my newbie self for having made it this far  :o

I can upload the file if anyone wants to try test it out...anyone? please?  ;)

Ok thanks so much. Here is my file. I have created a longer strand - seeing as though the problem seems to be the joints. The thing is that I will be creating various different panelling with this material, so I need to have different clipping planes apply...if that makes sense.

Anyways...that's where I am so far. I'm still testing it out my side.

Thanks a mil

Getting there...

Have absolutely no clue how to place the hessian ties now

Hi everyone,

I'm attaching what I ended up with with the ceiling screens. The base mesh itself was fine, but because I couldn't figure out how to place the hessian ties within railclone itself I ended up photoshopping them. It took hours. It was painful. I was happy with the result but now we are doing another 4 images with way more of this mesh included, and I will shoot myself if I have to photoshop that many ties.

Below is a crop of the final image.

I have also attached my final scene file with the ceiling. Please can someone tell me how to attach the hessian ties at the intersections...taking into account all the randomisation of the fronds themselves.

I would GREATLY appreciate it.

Thanks a mil,
Terri

I tried but couldn't come up with RC solution.
my approuch would be to make clean straight, mesh and deform afterward manually/ noise modifier

Hi Rokas,

Thanks for looking at this. I've also tried and came to the same conclusion as you - create a regular grid and then deform. The only disadvantage is they you'll lose the instancing. This style is difficult because the random placement on both axis means there's not a way for RailClone to know where the slats intersect. Another option would be to make a spline grid first and then use this with an L1S generator to add the slats and the knots, but it would lose parametricism.

Thanks,

Paul

Hi guys,

Thanks so much for the reply. What a pity  :-\

Paul, will this slow down my render times significantly?

Thanks again,
Terri

It wont slow You down, when done creating geometry, convert to proxy so viewport and rendering will be just fine.

Rokas would you mind sending me your scene file so I can see the best way to create the simple fence before deforming? Still trying to wrap my head around everything.

Thanks
