Title: How to create these columns

Hey all,

I'm trying to create some parametric columns that replicate the one's I've made in sketchup. Basically the middle timber section will be to scale/tile depending on the length of the column, and then capped off at either end with the metal pieces; I think this is something I could achieve myself fairly easily... But how do I get the bases that the columns sit on (and the parts where they meet the roof) to stay upright on the Z axis?

I hope this makes sense?
