I have some problem in making some tiling on the wall.
« on: July 12, 2014, 08:22:51 PM »
Hi iToosoft,
I have some problem in making some tiling on the wall. See my picture in attachment and model. How can I make the `Z rotation` work correctly when `Extend X/Y Size to Area` is checked without X/Y Splines ? The `Z rotation` option is very important.
Any walkaround except Collapsing the Railclone object to mesh?

Thanks for your reply.

while waiting answer from iToo, as a dirty workaround i offer creating that rotated pattern as default geometry and using x spline for path
as a bonus- this way you can have curved surfaces covered too:

Thanks for your help.
I know this method. But this is not the point. I want to use the `Z Rotate` to rotate the tile interactively.

Hi,

Thanks for getting in touch. If you are using the clipping path to automatically set the XY dimensions of a 2d Array, RailClone uses the spline projected on the RailClone object's local Z axis. The easiest way to get this to work therefore is to create the spline and RailClone object so that their local Z axis align, either by creating them both in the same orthogonal viewport or by creating on the xy axis in perspective and later rotating both into place. You can also use the realign button from the base objects rollout to automatically match the RailClone object to the base spline's rotation and position.

@rokas thanks for the nice alternative solution.  :)

Hope that helps,

Many thanks,

Pau

Thanks for the reply. But I don't get it. See my attachments. The main point that I want to rotate the segment alone the Local Z axis later.
In maxscript,
I input "$.objecttransform*(inverse $.transform)" then I get "(matrix3 [1,0,0] [0,1,0] [0,0,1] [0,0,0])". It means Xform of all Objects are clean.
Can you upload an example file ? Please just modify my scene file in the topic, Thanks.

Hi,

My apologies, you're right, it is not behaving as expected. I'll pass this issue on to the development team. In the meantime, as a workaround, it is possible to set up the RailClone object as you demonstrate with the Z axis aligned, and then rotate the RailClone object only around the local Z axis to the required angle. Finally, reselect the spline to re-apply the clipping path. Please find attached a quick demo file.

I hope this helps,

Many thanks,

Paul

I get it now. I managed to rotate the tile as expected now. I hope you will fix the bug soon. :)
