Title: License server under Linux with wine
Post by: JG_archviz on October 15, 2025, 08:01:59 am
Hello is it possible to run the License Server on a linux distribution with wine?

Since the recent windows 10 EOL i was considering running my current license server vm (windows 10 on QNAP VM) for autodesk network-license (old ones), Corona license server and itoosoft license server..
The autodesk and corona/chaos license server are probably able to run under linux natively but the itoosoft is windows only. So i was wondering if it could run under wine in linux, or if there are some dependencies, that are not available under wine/linux

My goal would be a very lite linux VM installation running on my qnap server with just the basic functionality to run the license-server apps ...
I know the restrictions with CPU paththrough and the current itoosoft-license-server runs very good under windows10, but the win10 vm feels more and more sluggish and causing trouble with chaos-licensing.

There might be a chance someone already tried it to get it working ... or at least failed. I can understand, when there might be not a "supported" itoosoft answer on that, as they clearly say the license server is windows only.

Hi,

It should be possible — the licensing server software can be installed on a virtual server. The only limitation is that our licensing system uses the CPU ID to identify the hardware. In virtualized environments, this ID may change if a different physical CPU is assigned to the virtual machine each time it’s rebooted. This issue can be resolved by setting the Processor Affinity, which ensures the same CPU is always assigned to a specific VM. For example, in VMware ESX, this is defined through the Scheduling Affinity setting.

I hope this helps.

Best regards,

If all you need is to run the license server, you should look into Tiny11 core https://github.com/ntdevlabs/tiny11builder it uses very little resources and it's got a small footprint.
There is also a Tiny10 version which is even smaller but you need a windows 10 ISO that I couldn't find at the Microsoft website. I don't trust any other website to download the ISO so I just used Tiny11.

I installed Linux Mint in a VM on my Qnap Virtualization Station and its running wine.

Installing the Itoo License Manager worked so did the activation of the licenses...

Running fine so far. Will see if that will be a persistent sollution

maybe i was too hesitating.

After reboot it shows licenses are activated, and also hardware-id is the same as when it worked.

But server information says "No network licenses installed" ---- bummer.
