Title: Lights cannot be added to railclone system
Post by: SN1109 on December 06, 2014, 08:49:23 AM
Lights cannot be added to railclone system. Why? When this ability will be added?

I am using light material now, but this element is not so customisable as real light object like omni or spot. For example, I can't turn off shadows and cant set far attenuation, so ugly noise coming from my huge amount of street lights. I'm talking about Corona Renderer light material. Don't know how this will work in VRay.

it has been discussed before:

You can clone geometry the way You like, and after that, replace mesh with light.

That guy posted his question in far April 08, 2011. And still this ability was not implemented?

I'm asking programmers of itoo:
Guys, is it so hard for you? Or you don't know how to do this?

In short words: it's not possible. RailClone only can generate geometry, not other type of objects as lights. This is a limitation of the Max SDK, not ours.

Just thinking.. maybe it is possible to implement a kind of workaround for this limitation by a small script which makes what you suggested - using a geometry in RC (which takes dimension from the selected light) and replacing/aligning the geometry with the lights at the end (or before render)?

Hi,

Possible workflow for these cases would be to convert the RailClone (or its copy) object to instances with help of RailClone Tools (http://docs.itoosoft.com/display/RAILCLONE/RailClone+Tools) (individual instanced objects) and than clone your light object with 3ds Max's Clone and Align tool as shown on attached screenshots (with VRayLight / CoronaLight objects). Or replace these instances with help of this Replace Objects Script (http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/replace-objects-script) (or any similar script). Hope you'll find it useful.

Kind regards,
