Title: mat randomize error w. Corona
Post by: Jens Andersen on December 04, 2015, 11:05:21 AM
Hi

I tried the scene from this thread: http://forum.itoosoft.com/index.php?topic=3253.0 (booleans.max)

In Vray, it works fine. But if I change render to corona and mats to corona, the randomize doesn't work on the "full tile".

On a side note, is it possible to create a displacement map from a railclone tile facade as in the booleans thread? I have a rather complex building with lots of different angled faces and having to do a RC object pr. face would take way too long.

Thanks.

Hi,

Unfortunately the Material node used to randomise and instances IDs uses some unique features of V-Ray's SDK, so it doesn't work with other renderers. The reason it works around the clipping boundary is that these tiles have been sliced and are therefore not being sent to the renderer as instanced geometry. You can see a full list of supported features by renderer here (http://docs.itoosoft.com/display/RAILCLONE/Requirementsl).

If the poly count is not too high, one solution to get it working is to disable instancing. To do this go to the Display rollout and uncheck Use Instancing Engine.

There should be no problem converting a RailClone object to a displace map, you can use the same procedure as shown in this helpful tutorial  (http://bertrand-benoit.com/blog/frank-gehry-style-titanium-scales/)by Betrand Benoit.

I hope that helps but please let me know if you have further questions.

Many thanks!

Paul

Hi Paul

Wow, thanks for the very quick reply. Will try the instancing trick and see how render times compare.

I'm still trying to learn this tool, but have a hard time wrapping my head around it. The constraints of axis x,y,z does not work well with my intuative mindset after using the floor generator plugin from cg-source ;)

My model faces are not perfectly aligned to the world axis, so just getting the first sloping roof to work has taken me more than an hour of trial and error. I tried setting it up as in your roof "eyebrow" file here: http://forum.itoosoft.com/index.php?topic=3271.msg12735#msg12735
It didn't really like my spline it seems. So now I've "brute forced" it with the tiles transform settings and adding a slope to my 2S spline drawn in top view.

Shouldn't I just be able to select the sides of the roof polygon, convert selection to splines, make this as my included clipping area, and use the sloping roof as surface object? Here I find it really hard to grasp how to get the object to align correctly to the surface (facade 3.jpg). Could you point me to a tutorial that explains this scenario better?

On a second note, the end clipping. Is this just fixed with a bottom/side object the same size as the main object? (facade 2.jpg) - so it won't mess the tiling pattern.

I will read Bertrands tutorial. Thank you very much for that. Might be the way to go for now.

Thanks again for great service.

Hi,

No problem - we'd like to make RailClone easier for this kind of usage and we'll be looking carefully at this for future releases. In the meantime you might find this chapter on Clipping Splines from (http://docs.itoosoft.com/display/RAILCLONE/6+-+How+to+use+Clipping+Splines) out Next Steps with RailClone guide useful.

Many thanks!

Now I feel silly... Rule no. 3 from your link Paul: "The Projection axis relates to the local pivot system of the RailClone object - not the spline's or world's axes." <- My tiling works like a charm now!

Instead of copying my entire RC object and adjusting those pr. face, I now just enable "Auto Grid" and create a new RC object directly on the new face (roof or wall). I copy the same style to the new RC object, select the new outer lines of that face (ie in the form of a spline) and everything just works beautifully!

Creating roof tiles with flying speed now :)

Only need to think of a smart way to handle edges between faces (attachment)...

Have a great weekend Paul! Life saver!

Hi,

Glad it's working well for you now  :)

I normally cover those edges with hip tiles but this my not suit your roof type. A possible alternative it to project the roof tiles down from above, so you don't rotate the RailClone's axis to match the roof pitch but do it with the generator's Rotate parameter instead. This results in a better mitre on the corners. There are a few other posts showing different approaches to roofs that may be of uset:
