Valser Steiner Wall
« on: October 13, 2015, 11:49:18 AM »
Hi,
Has anyone, or does anyone, know if we could effectively create something like the images included using Railclone Pro?
We already made the model of the differend stones with some variation (Valser Stein stones model.max),
here is the link to the .zip file fotr the attachments:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/1shymtgytctwp0n/Valser%20Stein.zip?dl=0)
The main problem is how to make the corners (sample Valser Stein wall.jpg). And the opening for the windows wthout removing the displacement. The other issue (Valser Stein wall.jpg) is how to made de even rows protude to the other oneven rows?
Also in attachment the file with the wall who has to be done in those stones. (Valser Stein Wall.max)
thanks in advance for your replies!
Patric

Hi Patric,

Thanks for contacting us. Please see the file in the link below for a possible solution, I've added a few notes to the graph to explain in more detail how it works.

Valser Stein stones RC version.zip

There are a couple of aspect of this that are challenging in RailClone. Ideally you don't want to slice the segments, so we should use Adaptive mode which scales segments to fill the available space. Unfortunately this doesn't work with segments of different lengths so segments have been combined using the compose operator into units that share and identical length. You can read more about this limitation here.

Also, because you can see the reveals around windows we can't use booleans to cut out the apertures. Instead I propose creating a separate spline for each course of stones where a new window or door opening starts and ends on the Y Axis. In the image below for example there are 3 splines, one at base level, one at the course for the bottom of the window, and a third spline for the top of the window and door.

Finally, corners and the alternating brick pattern are created by using  Sequence operators set to increment on Y. In that way you can create the alternating offsets at the corners and the stepped courses of stones.

I hope the attached file is of use, please let me know if you have any further questions.

Many thanks!

Paul

Hi Paul,
First of all, thanks for the effort, (I ow you one), we made some changement to height of the stones(scale). And also changement for the corners to look more realistic.
But when you see at the test render, there is not that much variation in the stone textures, made with multi sub! We didn't found , at this moment, not any solution to solve that issue.
We are working here with the 2.3.4 version, maybe we need to upgrade to the latest version, so we can use the UVW XForm operator?
you can download it here;
https://www.dropbox.com/s/89zbxh78a0cglld/%21%21_G_Gebouw_Valser%20Stein%20buitenmuur.zip?dl=0
Is it possible to look again??
Thanks in advance.
Patric

Hi Patric,

No problem at all, happy to help out. I've tried your file here and it appears that the Material operator is working as expected.

However I am tested this using V-Ray 3.20.3 and RailClone 2.5.0. It could be that there's a problem between the versions of RailClone and V-Ray you are using. I understand you have RailClone 2.3.4, but could you let me know what version of V-Ray you are using?

That wall is starting to look great though!

Many thanks,

Paul

Morning Paul,
We are really happy that it's working as we wanted, we are using Vray version 3.10 for the moment, but if that could be the problem ogf not working well , we will upgrade to 3.20.
thanks again,
Patric

Morning Patric,

That'll be it. RailClone 2.3.4 was released before V-Ray 3.1 so there may be compatibility issues. V-Ray 3.1 is supported from RailClone version 2.4.4 and onwards but if you upgrade to V-Ray 3.2.x you'll need to upgrade to RailClone to 2.5 as well.

I hope that helps.

Many thanks!

Hi Paul,
RailClone works fine, with good result. :)
Just one issue, when loading that file as a Xref in a scene, after saving and closing that scene, it's not possible to reopen that particular scene with the Xref loaded?
any idea?
We have tried that for several times..... no result.
You can download the Xref here:

thanks in advance,
Patric

Hi Patric,

Thanks for the files, I can reproduce the problem here in Max 2016 using using XRef Scene. I've tried with other files though and they seem to be fine so we'll look into this and work out what's going on. In the meantime you should find that using XRef Objects works fine.

Many thanks,

Paul

Hi again Patric,

After much head-scratching I've realised the cause isn't RailClone at all, it appears to be the Stone source geometry because the problem occurs even without the RailClone objects in the scene. It could be to do with the instanced modifiers but I'm not sure. Anyway collapsing these to an editable poly appears to resolve the problem.

Hope that helps,

Many thanks!

Interesting post. I m undertaking a bit the same process as you were.
Would it be possible to download your test files again? The links are dead :(

Thank you in advance
Best
