Railclone doesn't work with grouped objects as single segment
« on: October 16, 2014, 10:00:11 AM »
Hi,

Love the software!

I frequently group multiple objects in to 1 grouped object in 3DS max. But to use this group as a railclone segment it doesn't work.
I need to attach everything to 1 object. It would greatly improve my speed if Railclone could just work with grouped objects.

Thanks.
Best Reagrds.

Sorry; a quick search on the form learned that this feature is delayed. Any idea when it will work (if possible at all)

No news, sorry. We tried to implement this feature, but found several technical limitations. Specially when a group includes non-geometric objects or multiple materials.

Hi Carlos,

Any update on when Groups will be recognised in RailClone Pro ?

Love the plug-in and am using it for my first project, and already learnt this limitation on first use ! (purchased Turbosquid model of over 1100 objects in group !).

Be great if Groups were recognised :)

Many thanks.

Hi, i'm afraid this may take some time yet.

To support groups properly, RailClone should create their owns materials (in a similar way to Forest). If not, items with different materials cannot put together in a same geometry.
This feature is in our to-do list, and once implemented it would be possible to handle groups...at least those composed by geometry objects.

Hi,

Came across this problem myself today.

How would railclone behave when you would (on a rather big grouped object):

1. Convert materials to multi-sub material on a grouped object.
2. (through a script?) convert/reconstruct a group to a railclone object with compose and transform node(s) etc. keeping hierarchies and  instances in tact and so on?

What I have done in the past is converted the group to an (animated) RayfireCache-object and railcloned this and that worked really well. Vray-proxies work as well.

Cheers,
Tim

I second this.
Being able to have a group of objects in a segment would make the interface and wiring alot more user-friendly.
For each object in the group you would be able to apply one mirror node instead of a mirror node for each object/segment for example.
