Railclone in Scene XREF -- Free Object problems
« on: July 13, 2017, 03:29:31 AM »
I created a free object in Railclone.  I used this max file as an Xref Scene in another file.  If I bind the XREF to a point and rotate the point, the XREF scene acts very strangely.  I believe it is because the Rail clone source segment is rotating and changing orientation along with the RC object itself and it's creating a compounding effect which creates the unusual behavior.

Perhaps this is unavoidable -- but it seems like an Xref scene should stay "rigid" and unchanged regardless of how it is rotated.  Notably using a non-Free object seems to be okay.

Is this a bug, or unavoidable -- or perhaps there is a setting in RC for free objects that would prevent this?

I've attached an example below.  The "Scene" file bring in the RC Free file as an Xref (and rotates it with animation) so load the "Scene" to see the issue.

Hi,

That's because both the base spline and the RailClone object rotate (you can easily reproduce it in the "source" scene by rotating both objects). We´ll check what can be done to "lock" the RC object, when using the Free Object mode.

Best regards,

Right, I understand why it's happening.  It just seems very undesirable for an XREF to act this way.

Hi, this problem is fixed for the next update.

Until now, when "Free Object" is enabled, the position of the spline is ignored, but Rotation/Scale are used. That was causing the problem with rotated bind objects.
In the next update, RailClone ignores the full transformation of the spline (Position, Rotation and Scale), fixing the issue.

This is great news to me also! I find the whole reference of another file so irritating, there doesn't seem to be any solid solution, XrefScene is the closest but it's so buggy (not just in terms of railclone but in general). A

Anything that can help this would be great - Also - If i mirrored the dummy that is controlling the xref scene, can we get it do it doesn't invert all the splines? this mess's up all the rail-clones the only way round it would be to have two files instead of one which is of course not efficient and doubles up on memory...

With the changes done in the latest update, it's possible to mirror or transform the dummy in any way, without causing problems.

Anyway, i just noticed there are problems with Clipping areas. That's normal because the position of the spline is critical in the clipping process.
I continue working on a possible workaround for this case.

It's out: https://forum.itoosoft.com/announcements/railclone-pro-3-1-4-beta

That was quick work! I'm going to give it a test now with 54 houses, of which ten house types should be a good field test ;)

Please note the problem with Clipping areas was not solved on this update yet. But the other RC objects should work fine.

Yes you are correct, do you think it will be possible in the next release? apologies if you get these questions all the time how long before you think it could be implemented into the next beta?

No idea, sorry. By now our priority is to fix all issues, in order to have a stable version.
Also we are dealing with two betas at same time (Forest and RailClone), which is not usual, so the progress is slower.

hi carlos, Have you had any luck with the problem with clipping areas?
