Make an object span two splines
« on: February 02, 2015, 05:43:03 PM »
Hello all,

I am learning RailClone Pro, and have been very impressed.  But it appears I am trying to do something that it is not capable of doing.  But I'm hoping someone knows a way...

I have two paths.  Along one path I am spacing out some poles.  Along the other path, I have a cable running.  I would like to use RailClone to create the poles, then add an arm that will scale it's length to reach from the pole to a location on the cable's path and add a small clip to hold it.  The spacing between the two paths varies, and neither is a straight line.

With a Linear 1S array, I see no way to include an additional spline to be able to calculate the distance between two splines.  I had tried doing an Array 2S, but couldn't get that to work either.  Maybe it was something with my Expression, but I could not get the Y value of the Y spline to subtract from the Y value of the X spline.

Does anyone have ideas of how to get an object to span between two splines?

Thanks.

Paul Roberts

Hi,

Thanks for the kind words. Unfortunately this is a tricky problem to solve at the moment. Ideally we would add a new generator that uses two parallel splines, this is already on our to-do list but there are some technical issues that must be ironed out before we can implement it in a release.

Meanwhile you may find some of the solutions discussed in this thread useful, there are a few workarounds discussed there and some downloadable examples too.

I hope that helps, if you have any further questions or you'd like me to take a more detailed look at your style so far please just let me know.

Many thanks,

Paul
