Conform/Align to Surface
« on: May 17, 2016, 06:18:09 PM »
Hi,

When using a surface (other than a surface resembling a displaced groundplane) with a Linear 1S Generator, all segments get projected from RC-object +Z onto that surface.
This gives unwanted results when applying it to closed surfaces (e.g. a sphere, cylinder or torus). For now it only works with objects that are similar to displaced groundplanes.

I've included screenshots and a simple scene to demonstrate.

What would make this feature even a lot more useful:

- option to change the projection-axis for conforming to surface to closest surface normal.
- option to align RC segments to the closest surface-normal of an object without them conforming/moving to that surface.

Hope this makes sense :)

Thanks,
Tim

Hi Tim,

Thanks for the feedback and the files, it's always helpful to hear how you'd like to see RailClone improved. You're correct that at the moment surfaces work by projecting the path along the RailClone object's Z axis until they hit the surface and this doesn't work well for polygons that are facing in the other direction or are at steep angles. We'd like to improve the way surfaces work in RailClone and in fact this is already on our wishlist. I'll update it with your suggestions.

Thanks again!

Paul.
