Roof Planes & specifying them on segments
« on: July 25, 2019, 05:53:27 PM »
Hi Railclone,

I'm making a series of Tudor Houses and i'm trying to add roofing elements to them (just planes with a tiled bercontile texture), but i'm having trouble trying to limit the roof to just specific sides/directions of the spline in 3D space.

Ideally what i'm trying to build is something like this: https://gyazo.com/642bca1f87cefc9496ee16773cc31652

I've worked out how to add it the whole way around: https://gyazo.com/590ae940fd33d4ade6262940eefd57a7 although there is a small issue with the tops not welding when they come together. https://gyazo.com/6c58cdc869e9cb7c9459ef56a5861425

But what i'm trying to do is build a vertical element on say the north and south side of the spline, have the roof planes on the east and west side and have them slice the vertical element. I've worked out how to do the floors, but i'm struggling to find ways to do this, is it possible?

Many thanks.

Hi, Thanks for the question. This has prompted a little bit of experimentation on our side as it's not an easy thing to solve with RailClone. Please take a look at the attached file.

It creates a simple roof, it has options for roof height and separate controls for the angle of each hip should you need it. There is also the ability to rotate the whole thing by 90 degrees.

We're working on a more sophisticated version with a few more options, but that will require RailClone 4.

Hope it helps,

All the best,

Paul

Hi Paul,

Thanks a lot for this! Only problem is I'm using 2016, so can't open the file. Could you save it for that version? can you build geometry onto the face ends so to speak? Timbers etc? Or is that something that would need to be worked on as a separate option?

I see that in the new Railclone beta, you can specific specific elements, so hopefully that will work so that I can go in and set exact features for where they are needed!

Many thanks,

Grant

Thanks for resaving the file  Rokas,

Grant: To answer your other questions, you could certainly add more detailed geometry, especially if you needed a simple gable end. But it does work by scaling triangular segments (no clipping is taking place), so it depends on how much deformation you can get away with.

Many thanks,

Paul

Thanks for the replies!

To give a bit more idea of what i'm trying to do, it's a roof like this: https://gyazo.com/1d60216c8fc04c8f2a3c58b91337277a

I've already got RailClone set up working for the ground/1st floors, but it would be awesome to find a way to be able to block out the whole city with splines, randomizing the elements as I go! I'll give the file a look though, hopefully it can be a good starting point.

Thanks,

Grant
