Some overhand I can't seem to control
« on: June 26, 2020, 10:13:39 AM »
So I have this railclone object which pretty much works to my satisfaction but there's only one thing that bothers me.
If you look to the end of the spline, you can see that top segments overhangs the spline end, and I don't know how to change it.
The fact that it overhangs its okay, it supposed to, but I need it to be strictly 5cm in both start and end. Is it possible?
The point is the spline borders only the wall at the base.

Thank you!  :)
But I forgot another issue. Sometimes those fences are inclined, and this is where it gets tricky..
Is there a fix for this?

Update, Thanks to Paul we have a solution for this style.

Hope this helps.

Thank you, this is great!
But there is just one thing - the spline should end where the wall ends, not where the coping ends. This is the part where I was struggling about the most.
This is important because when building the scenes I only have to consider the wall below, and the coping is just a decoration.
Also, I use the same spline to place fences, yet fences don't look great when they are right on the edge..
I draw a simple section to illustrate it.

This is already fixed by Rokas. If you download the file and open the RC object you can find a node for the "Wall" generator named "Padding End". This is now set to 5cm and if you change it to 0 it will remove the overhang.

What this method ensures is that the top part will never protrude from the spline. It actually sets back the wall to create the overhang, if and when you want it.

I saw what you mean and this is exactly what's wrong with it.
I don't need the wall to be padded from start/end - that will defeat the whole propose. The point is so that Coping will overhang.
I know it makes zero to no difference by the way it looks, but its a huge difference in scene moderation and preparation.

Also found another thing with it - mapping related.
Such as this:

As you can see - this is not correct. Yes, the oddities can be semi-sorted out by changing to "Vertical" Deform and disabling "Flat Bottom" to 0 and it looks like this:

But IRL nobody does it this way. Usually the stone looks like this:

Which can be simply achieved by throwing a UVW mapping on top of the RC object. Which is fine, but it destroyes all the randomization in UVW Xform operators.

At present, I'm not how that UVW issue could be easily fixed in the graph. However, how about using a triplanar map for the walls? That way you can keep the RailClone's UVW offsets for the top part and get automatic mapping for the rest.

All the best,

Paul

Great idea! Works like a charm.
Regarding solving it with RC - what if we could apply an UVW operator directly on an entire Generator, instead of segments?

Ah, it seems I misunderstood. Sorry about that. I think I understand what you mean and the first thing comes to mind is to look at the standard hips & bonnets macro. It has an option to extend the generator past the spline, by using a start object. When you apply that you can remove the padding for the wall, so the wall will end with the spline.
