What's the best way to make the object with displacement map?
« on: September 03, 2014, 10:31:48 AM »
Hi developers,
I am modelling the main street of my scene. I used to add a VraydisplacementMod on such this object. But I am using Railclone Pro now. Should I add a VraydisplacementMod to a segment object or directly to the whole Railclone object ?
What's the best way to make the object with displacement map in Vray 2.40?

Hi,

First I should mention, that the VRayDisplacementMod will not be rendered on RailClone object if this modifier is applied to used Segment. For this purposes should be 3ds Max's Displace modifier used.

Instead the VRay's VRayDisplacementMod could be applied to whole RailClone object. Just take in mind, that in case of complex geometry this could lead to a high memory usage as the RailClone object will be treated as a one big mesh (instancing will be ignored).

Anyway, there is possible workaround by using Displacement map in VRayMtl slot and adjusting Vray's Default Displacement values.

So, it'll always depend on your scene, which method of applying displacement will be the most efficient.

Hope this helps you a bit.

Kind regards,

By the way, I want to know whether instancing will be ignored when I enable the Vertex Weld function.
I often need a closed mesh in my scene.
Does it reduce the time of rendering when I enable using V-Ray Geometry shaders ?
If I enable the Vertex Weld function, does the Railclone Pro turn the whole object into a super complex mesh whether the V-Ray Geometry shaders is enabled or disabled ?

That's it. Vertex Weld disables the instancing engine, same as turning off the Geometry shader option.
