railing detail that sticks to stair steps
« on: September 19, 2017, 04:14:53 PM »
Which nodes should I be using to pull this off? I've gotten decent enough with railclone to put a simple railing together like attached - but having the lower part snap to steps is a mystery. I'd try including the stairs in the railclone system but I don't expect there to always be 2 stiles on each step as the steps curl around at the turning point.

Hi,

Well, stairs can be tricky to solve within one style as depending on its design, it can bring several problematic places and adjusting the base spline might be needed. Unfortunately, it's not possible to use two splines - "bottom" & "top" and manual tweaking is usually the easiest way like in this case.

gotcha, thanks Michal - so stiles with details that sit at the step, and at the rail - would be impossible unless constructed in a way that it can be adjusted via an editable poly. At least with my example I find that the stairs are a bit too complicated to work with once in edit poly. I'll need to either break them down into multiple railclone objects, or manually build them.

I almost got it - separated the rail into two railclone objects - there's the rail with upper stile detail, and then stile with lower detail (which uses a surface for snapping to)

but started having issues with stile spacing between railclone objects when removing the end caps on the second railclone object. I either need an option to keep the end object but not make it visible - or need to set up spacing with fixed measurements. Right now I'm using adaptive mode. Maybe Tile makes more sense?

Hi,

Thought as mentioned previously, stairs can be tricky to solve "completely", please feel free to send us your scene and we'll check it here. Thanks in advance.
